What's in our tour?
The Madrid Food Tour is a chance to binge on select Spanish foods, to get to know Madrid from the inside, to meet some colorful locals, and of course to eat well.
In the city that gave tapas to the world, we explore Cebada, Madrid’s historical food market, we taste and sample, and we find out why food is so central to Spanish culture.
Your guide is a born-and-raised local with an infectious love for tapas and for Spanish cuisine.
We meet in front of Teatro la Latina. We catch sight of the flashy-looking triple dome of the Cebada Market food market: the first of our many photo opps today.
The group is small, and the guide inquires there and then as to what each guest wants to eat and explore. The guide also provides anecdotes to illustrate the peculiar history of Spanish food: who invented tapas? what about sangria?
Our first stop is generally – what else – our favorite ham stall. What’s serrano ham vs. iberico ham? And how can you never go wrong picking good ham?
After our first stop, the format varies depending on the season and the wishes of each group. Still, we make sure to examine and to sample:
appetizers such as patatas bravas, stuffed mussels tapas or “parrochas” grilled sardines
specialty sea foods: gambas a la plancha, or chipirones
a selection of ham and cheese
a piece of grilled beef or vegetables straight from the barbecue
organic fruits of the season, sweets such as the anise-flavored Buñuelo
and beverages: local craft beer or a glass of Rioja red wine.
We take in the new-found energy of the Cebada food market. It’s loud, it’s busy, it’s entertaining. It mirrors the changes at hand in Spanish society.
We make stops at local eateries and drink stands, to sample the foods we’ve just picked, to discuss them, and to decide what to eat next. Like any food lover, each tour will make room for the particular season and the delivery of the day.
