Nowadays dreadlocks are allowed in workplaces, schools, and Hollywood, unlike old days. However, some people still judge others for having dreadlocks, that’s why we should always applaud those who proudly rock their hairstyles.

Dreadlocks have become more of a fashion statement these days to many people not only for Rastafarian culture like before. In this article, we have looked at the most famous people who proudly rock their dreadlocks without fear. Some of these celebrities include;

1. Ava DuVernay

 

Ava DuVernay is an American filmmaker and former film publicist. It is interesting to note that Ava was the first ever African -American woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Director and Academy Award for Best Picture. She has won other several awards over the years.

The filmmaker is one of the people who proudly rock their dreadlocks. Ava said her wearing dreadlocks was a journey of becoming more of herself.

2. Lisa Bonet

Lisa Bonet is an American actress born in San Francisco, California on November 16, 1967. She was the daughter of Allen Bonet, an opera singer, and Arlene Joyce, a teacher. Her passion for acting began when she was still young and at age 11 she was acting in commercials. She landed a chance to act in a comedy series ‘The Cosby Show’ in 1984 as Denise Huxtable when she was 16 of age.

The actress is one of the people who have embraced natural hair, specifically dreadlocks and she is widely known for her iconic dreadlocks. Many people have looked at her as a role model and gave them the confidence to embrace their natural hair texture. Lisa started wearing her dreadlocks back in the 1980s, at that time many people judged her since dreadlocks were not accepted nor understood at the time.

3. Lalah Hathaway

Lalah Hathaway began her musical career in 1990 to date. Her first self-titled album ‘Lalah Hathaway’ was released in 1990, at that time she was still a student at Berklee College of Music. Since then, she has released other successful albums such as ‘A Moment’ in 1994, ‘Outrun the Sky’ in 2004, and ‘Self Portrait’ in 2008 among others.

Hathaway is a lover of hair and before she decided to dreadlock her hair she had tried all types of hair such as dookie braids, micro braids, weaves, and afros among others. She as well tried changing her hair color to red, and blonde, making it curly hair as well as trying straight hair. After a long try of all different kinds of things in her hair, she decided to loc it in 1997.

4. Wiz Khalifa

Wiz Khalifa is a widely known American rapper, songwriter, actor, and singer. His official name is Cameron Jibril Thomas, and Wiz Khalifa is his stage name. His parents divorced when he was only three years, and he lived in different countries such as Germany, Japan, United Kingdom before settling in Pittsburgh since his parents served in military service.

Wiz started writing and performing his own lyrics even before he was a teenager and at the age of 15, he was already recording his own music at a local studio known as I.D Labs. Khalifa is among the people who love their dreadlocks and it acts as his signature. His journey of keeping dreadlocks started back in 2012, and they are now tall and healthy.

5. Willow Smith

Willow Smith is an American teen actress and singer. She is currently growing beautiful locs which she loves rocking with however, she doesn’t love styling her locs.

Despite being a teen she has already won several accolades such as an NAACP Image Award, a Young Artist Award, an MTV Video Music Award, a BET Award, and nominations for two Daytime Emmy Awards among others.

Damian Marley is a Jamaican DJ, singer, rapper, and lyricist. He is the youngest son of Bob Marley, a reggae musician. When we talk of famous people who love rocking their dreadlocks then Damian is one of them. He has long locs nearly touching the floor but he is not ready to cut or let them go. Dreadlock is one of his signatures and many people know him of his locs.

He was a determined young man and at the age of 13, he formed a musical group known as Shephards. This group opened a Reggae Sunsplash, a reggae music festival in 1992. Marley has released several albums such as Mr. Marley, Halfway Tree, Welcome to Jamrock, and Stony Hill among others.

7. Whoopi Goldberg

Whooping Goldberg is an American actor, comedian, author, and television personality. She is one of the famous people who have embraced their natural hair and have dreadlocks. She has passed rejection throughout her career due to dreadlocks but she says, she had to teach disrespectful Hollywood professionals how to handle her natural hair. This shows the love she has for her hair.

She is among the lucky 18 entertainers to win the EGOT which is given to people who have won all four major American art awards, which include a Grammy Award, An Emmy Award, an Academy Award, and Tony Award.

8. Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder is officially known as Stevland Hardaway Judkins. Stevie Wonder is his professional name. He is a famously known American singer-songwriter. Wonder has had dreadlocks for the longest time almost all his career journey. Dreadlocks have become his signature and many people know him for them.

Due to his excellent skills in singing, he has won several awards to date such as the 25 Grammy Awards in 1996, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male in 1974, Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male in 1977, and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 among others.

9. Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison was widely known as an American novelist. Her first novel was ‘The Bluest Eye’ which was published in 1970. Later she wrote another novel in 1977, known as ‘Song of Solomon’ which made her popular worldwide and won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Other awards include Pulitzer Prize for Beloved in 1987, and Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993 among others.

Toni was known also known for a signature dreadlock. She kept her dreadlocks for the longest time, though can’t tell the exact time, as long as she is remembered till her death she had the locs.

10. Richard Sherman

The American football cornerback Richard Sherman is a free agent. He began his career as a wide receiver and he played college football at Stanford at the time before moving to cornerback as a junior. He has played for several teams such as Seattle Seahawks from 2011 to 2017, San Francisco 49ers from 2018 to 2020, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.

It is also important to note that apart from football Richard is mostly known for his dreadlocks. He has long dreadlocks, shoulder length, which are well groomed. It is not easy to keep and maintain locs but Richard has tried big time.
