Bridesmaids Actresses: Top 5 Talented Cast of the Hilarious Comedy
I still remember the first time I saw the trailer for Bridesmaids back in 2011. I was immediately intrigued by this raucous female-driven comedy starring Kristen Wiig, who up until that point I had only known from her hilarious roles on Saturday Night Live. The trailer promised a wedding movie with a twist – no cheesy romance, no cookie-cutter characters. This was going to be a no-holds-barred, R-rated event, with Wiig leading the pack as Annie, a down-on-her-luck woman tasked with being maid of honor for her best friend. My excitement only grew as I saw the rest of the talented cast – Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Rose Byrne.
Some of the funniest women in comedy finally had the chance to shine in leading film roles. When I finally saw the movie, I was not disappointed. I found myself laughing harder than I had in years, impressed by the cast’s willingness to commit to outrageous, sometimes cringe-worthy scenarios all for the sake of comedy. Bridesmaids announced that women could be just as crude, hilarious, and appealing as men on the big screen. Join me as I highlight some of the best actresses in the show.
The following are the top five talented women actresses in the Bridesmaids comedy:
1. Kristen Wiig

The standout performance in Bridesmaids belongs to Kristen Wiig as Annie, the maid of honor and best friend to the bride. Wiig brings her trademark goofy charm with a new level of depth and vulnerability to the character of Annie, who is broke, single, and struggling when she agrees to be her best friend’s maid of honor. Throughout the absurd wedding preparations, Wiig balances Annie’s quirky awkwardness and desperation for connection with genuine warmth and loyalty toward her friend.
Even as Annie engages in cringe-worthy behavior, like getting drunk and belligerent on the plane ride over, Wiig gives her a relatability that makes you root for her anyway. Thanks to Wiig’s incredibly nimble comedic skills, Annie is hilarious and three-dimensional. Wiig proves she can anchor a blockbuster comedy just as adeptly as her SNL cast mates like Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler, and her performance is by far the funniest and most memorable part of this raucous female comedy ensemble.
2. Maya Rudolph

As Lillian, the wide-eyed bride-to-be, Maya Rudolph is a perfect counterbalance to Kristen Wiig’s Annie. Rudolph brings her bubbly energy and infectious charm to the role, making it easy to see why Wiig’s character is so devoted to her friend. As Lillian glides through wedding preparations and fawns over her new wealthy fiancé, Rudolph hilariously portrays her as likable but out-of-touch compared to her struggling single friend. Yet Rudolph also reveals little cracks in Lillian’s façade as the wedding approaches, showing the character’s anxieties beneath the perfect bride image.
Her comic timing blends seamlessly with Wiig’s throughout the film, culminating in a touching moment where Lillian reminds Annie why they’re best friends. With her bright presence and rapport with Wiig, Rudolph delivers a memorably effervescent performance that provides the warm heart nestled between the raunchy comedy moments.
3. Melissa McCarthy

Melissa McCarthy stole every scene she was in as Megan, the outlandish sister of the groom. McCarthy took what could have been a stock oddball character and turned her into a funny performance that launched her into superstardom. She fearlessly commits to the most uninhibited antics, like provocatively tossing herself on the kitchen sink to show off a new tattoo or aggressively seducing an air marshal on the plane. Yet McCarthy also gives Megan surprisingly tender moments, like when she opens up about her lonely life.
She forges an endearing chemistry with Wiig that provides the emotional core beneath the vulgar humor. McCarthy’s wholly original, riotous performance was a breakthrough for her abilities as a comedic actress and made it impossible to look away whenever the unfiltered, brashest bridesmaid Megan was onscreen.
4. Rose Byrne

There is always one friend who stands out in the group, whether positively or negatively. As the prim and proper bridesmaid Helen, Rose Byrne stood out and provided the perfect foil to the ragtag group of friends. With her immaculate designer outfits and smarmy smile, Byrne hilariously leaned into the villain role as the snobbish new friend trying to edge out Wiig’s Annie. Byrne demonstrated brilliant comedic timing and commitment as Helen passively-aggressively flaunted her wealth, culinary skills, and closeness with the bride.
The rivalry between Byrne and Wiig led to some of the most hilarious confrontations, as they one-upped each other throughout the wedding festivities. Yet Byrne also revealed Helen’s insecurities about not fitting in with this wild group of women. With her portrayal both uproarious and layered, Byrne gave the cookie-cutter character depth and proved herself a gifted comedic actress by holding her own against the formidable talents of Wiig, McCarthy, and Rudolph.
5. Wendi McLendon-Covey

Lastly, as Rita, the worn-out mother of three, Wendi McLendon-Covey delivered a standout performance as the brutally honest bridesmaid. McLendon-Covey mined her frumpy character for endless comedy, shining in sly deadpan moments where she drops shocking one-liners about the mundane disappointments of her married life. Rita acts as the sardonic Greek chorus of the group, lobbing constant complaints and sarcastic commentary, much to Annie’s annoyance. Yet Rita also reveals vulnerability in poignant scenes where she opens up about her husband’s infidelity.
McLendon-Covey’s comic timing and honest portrayal make Rita both hilarious and relatable despite her constant cynicism. Though often overlooked next to the star power of Wiig and McCarthy, McLendon-Covey provides integral moments of caustic humor and truth that balance the zaniness of the rest of the ensemble. She stands out as one of the funniest elements in a wild cast.
The raucous laughter barely died down as the credits started rolling after my first viewing of Bridesmaids. This hilarious female-led comedy provided a long overdue funny and fresh perspective that only this brilliant cast could deliver. I left the theater with my cheeks sore from laughing and hoping to see much more of these talented comedic actresses in future films.
