Horror movies are a very interesting genre in the film industry because of the unique way they tell a story. It is always so mind-blowing how these movies have a knack for turning a simple chain of events into a very chaotic one full of scenes that will most definitely put you on the edge of your seat. This is probably why you get so angry while watching them because you feel like the characters should know better. For instance, they should have run faster or they shouldn’t have entered that room or they simply shouldn’t have made the decision they did. 

1. Scream

Scream is a pretty old and popular movie franchise that was first released in the 80s. Twenty-five years later, they came again with a bang and did not disappoint. After a streak of murders that managed to shock the whole town, a new killer emerges with the same ghost face mask. He begins targeting a group of teenagers and secrets from the past start unravelling. Unfortunately, some of the characters that survived in the previous Scream movies end up dying here so that’s a bit heartbreaking. Overall though, it is an amazing horror movie and it shouldn’t be a surprise that it made it first on our list. 

2. The Requin

‘The Requin,’ revolves around the story of a couple who go on a romantic getaway and find Another amazing themselves stranded at the sea, and sadly a tropical storm sweeps away their villa. For them to survive, they are forced to fight the elements while sharks are busy circling below. The events in this movie will keep you guessing and creating scenarios in your head about what you would have done if you were in the same position. It is still a movie making waves to date and that’s a really good thing. 

3. The Long Night

A weekend takes a very bizarre turn when this nightmare of a cult and its psychotic leader tries to fulfill an apocalyptic prophesy that was made a long time ago. It ends up being an indeed long night for them as they try to save themselves and maneuver around the maniac leader. Directed by Rich Ragsdale, this movie is one that is full of surprises and the plot is also really good.

In this movie, a high school student by the name of Jane Shipley seeks to mend her relationship with her childhood best friend, Merrit, and fit. When Jane’s teacher oversteps his boundaries, that’s when all hell breaks loose and all the drama begins. Directed by Lee Ann Kurr, this amazing movie stars Christian Camargo, Montse Hernandez, Cheyenne Haynes, and Anthony Keyvan this movie delivers. 

5. Shut In

Another amazing movie released in 2022, the story revolves around a young mother who is barricaded inside a pantry by her violent ex-boyfriend. Because of this, she must find a way to escape the escalating danger being posed by her ex-boyfriend. She has to protect her two small children and this is where the whole drama of the movie revolves around. Directed by D.J. Caruso, he manages to prove once again why he is an icon in the film industry. 

6. Those Who Walk Away

After Max and Avery meet up on a social media app for a first date, they end up in a haunted house only to realize the trauma they share may save them or end up in an unforgettable nightmare. It is one of those movies that doesn’t disappoint you and the plot keeps getting better as the movie progresses. 

7. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

In this movie, the formidable Leatherface comes back with a vengeance. After 48 years of hiding, he comes out of hiding and returns to terrorize a group of idealistic young friends who accidentally disrupt his shielded world in a remote Texas town. Directed by David Blue Garcia, it is another horror movie that is indeed a horror movie because of how gory and detailed it is.

This movie revolves around the story of the legendary rock band Foo Fighters who move into an Encino mansion that is steeped in grisly rock and roll history so as to record their anticipated 10th album. As they are recording their album, this is when all the drama erupts and the horrific details of the past start erupting. 

9. Fresh

Another detailed and very interesting horror movie, it tells the story of a woman who after quitting dating apps, meets a supposedly perfect man and even accepts his invitation to a romantic weekend getaway. She gets there and finds out that her ‘perfect man’ is far from perfect and actually adheres lives by all the definitions of a psychopath. She tries to get away from him after realizing he hides some very unusual appetites that she really couldn’t keep up with. Directed by Mimi Cave, this is one movie that will not disappoint. 

10. X

Released in 2022 ‘X’ is another horror movie that indeed blows your mind. Set in 1979, it tells the story of young filmmakers who set out to make an adult film in rural Texas. However, when their reclusive and elderly host catches them in the act, this is when the youngsters start fighting for their lives. It is a dramatic movie that is actually interesting and keeps you guessing. 

11. Umma

It tells the story of Amanda and her daughter, who live a quiet life on an American farm. However, when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, Amanda starts becoming haunted by the fear of turning into her own mother. 

12. Master

In this movie, three women strive so hard to find their place at an elite university. An anonymous racist then attacks a black freshman who insists she is being haunted by ghosts. Each woman must determine where the real menace lies and the whole movie now revolves around this drama. 

13. Night’s End

Another horror movie released in 2022, ‘Night’s End,’ tells the story of a haunted apartment that hires a stranger to perform an exorcism exercise. This quickly turns into a horrific scene and the movie now doesn’t disappoint in showing exactly how messed up the whole situation takes. Directed by Jennifer Reeder, it is a worthwhile horror movie. Another must-watch 2022 horror movie, it tells the story of a young game coder who starts up a lost 1980s survival horror game and this really causes havoc. Unknowingly, the youngster unleashes a hidden curse that ends up tearing reality and forces the gamer to make very terrifying decisions. Obviously, these decisions have some serious consequences and the movie actually revolves around this. It is also available on Netflix hence easily got. 

16. The Cellar

In this movie,  the daughter of a character known as Katie Woods mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house. It is soon discovered that there is an ancient and powerful entity lives there and they have to face it or risk losing their family’s souls forever. She therefore fights hard to ensure that this doesn’t happen and the whole movie focuses on this unfolding of events. 

17. Hatching

With a Metascore of 75, this movie is about a young gymnast who desperately tries to please her demanding mother and ends up discovering a strange egg.  She really tries to hide it and keep it warm but when it hatches, the creature that emerges shocks them all. Directed by Hanna Bergjolm, she does a great job of actualizing that thought you may deem impossible.  

18. The Twin

In this 109-minute-long movie, a mother confronts the bitter and unbearable truth about her surviving twin son. It is the kind of truth that creates havoc and it really makes the movie interesting. 

19. Monstrous

With a Metascore of 52, the movie centers around a traumatized woman who is fleeing from her very abusive ex-husband. She’s fleeing with her 7-year-old son and in a rote area, they get to realize that they have even bigger and more terrifying monsters to deal with.  

20. Firestarter

In this movie, a young girl tries so hard to understand how she mysteriously gained the power to set things on fire with her mind. The title of the movie kind of gives you an idea of what to expect but even more interesting is how as she struggles to understand where it all began, all the unexpected things and excitement take place. Directed by Keith Thomas, the movie has some of the most iconic actors and actresses like Zac Efron, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Dydenye Lemon among many others. This gives you the confidence that it will definitely deliver. 

21. Men

Again, from the title, this movie also gives you an idea of what to expect. The 100-minute-long horror film tells the story of a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside. This is after the death of her ex-husband and she’s looking for a place she can visit and have some peace of mind. However, when she arrives, peace of mind is the last thing the countryside is planning to offer. She fights for her life and the drama and suspense keep on you the edge of the seat as you try to figure out what will happen next. It is indeed a good movie and its Metascore of 65 also says something about its success.

Directed by Brea Grant, this movie also has some very iconic actors and actresses and this is what gives the audience the confidence that it won’t disappoint. Indeed, it delivers. ‘Torn Hearts’ follows the story of a country music duo who seek out the private mansion of their idol just to check it out and be in awe of their celebrity icon. As expected in a horror movie, they end up in a very twisted series of horrors that forces them to be honest with themselves and confront the lengths they would go to when it comes to achieving their dreams. This horror movie is a greatly done one, not to mention the amazing musical scores it has. 

23. Shark Bait

This horror/ thriller movie will kind of make your fear of sharks even more. This is the story of a group of friends, who decide to enjoy their weekend by stealing a couple of jet skis and race them out to sea. They end up in a horrific head-on collision that makes the struggle to get home even greater. They struggle to find a way home given how they have a badly injured friend who desperately needs medical attention and the waters below aren’t safe too. There lurks vicious predators who seek blood no matter what.  

24. Watcher

With a Metascore of 72 (very impressive indeed), a young American woman decides to move in with her husband to Bucharest. She however begins to suspect that the stranger who keeps watching her from the apartment across the street may actually be the local serial killer going around decapitating women and whom everyone is way of. Her struggle to survive and the fear that constantly grips her is what the movie is majorly based on and quite honestly what makes it so much interesting and worthwhile movie. Directed by Chloe Okuno, the movie gives a glimpse of what a talented storyteller and director she really is.  

25. Crimes of the Future

Another hut wenching 2022 horror movie, ‘Crimes of the Future,’ just from the name, lets you know that there will definitely be some elements of sci-fi. After all, any movie that has something to do with the future is usually sci-fi. I’m this particular movie, humans adapt to a synthetic environment that has new transformations and mutations. With his partner, the character showcases the metamorphosis his organs go through and the movie gets to show all this in all its gory glory. It is an amazing movie indeed.

26. Unhuman

‘Unhuman,’ is pretty interesting actually. It tells the story of a group of high school students whose school bus crashes on a field trip. They soon realize that they are being stalked by an attacker who wants to drive them out and just give them the anxiety of fighting to survive. Even literally. Once this happens, relationships get to be tested and this is where you wonder, will they really survive the test of time? The movie can be streamed online if you know where to look, so don’t miss out on this very interesting horror/thriller movie. It also has some comic relief here and there, hence definitely a movie to watch. 

27. Mid-Century

In another very interesting 2022 horror film, we get to meet a husband and wife who decide to do a weekend getaway in a mid-century modern vacation rental. Of course, nothing stays rosy for long in a typical horror movie. So before long, their very peaceful weekend is disrupted when the husband discovers that the owner of the establishment they’re staying at is a psychopath with a backyard that has buried secrets. As if that’s not enough, the psychopath has a weird infatuation with his wife and keeps giving her the creep.

28. Abandoned

Another 2022 horror movie revolving around a young couple, this movie tells the story of a young couple who move into a remote farmhouse together with their infant son. As expected after delivery for most mothers, this new mother unfortunately deals with postpartum depression and the psychosis gets to intensify and get out of hand as their new house also reveals secrets of its own. Imagine dealing with postpartum depression and a haunted house. Doesn’t sound fun at all. Directed by Spencer Squire, the movie takes you on quite a ride that’s unregrettable. 

29. Incantation

From the title itself, you can already guess the gist of this movie. The 110-minute-long horror film tells the story of a character by the name, of Li Ronan, who six years ago, was cursed after she broke a religious taboo. At the present moment, she must work hard to protect her daughter from the consequences of her actions because the devil has come collecting. The drama of the movie revolves around her ups and downs as she tries to outrun her curse while at the same time protecting her daughter. 

30. American Carnage

In this movie, we get to meet a governor who issues an executive order to arrest the children of undocumented immigrants. Sidenote: that alone is sick in itself. The detained youth are then offered an opportunity to have their charges dropped, but only if they volunteer to provide care to the elderly. What they don’t however know is that they are being used and the mysterious deaths of the volunteers leave them wanting to uncover the whole truth. American Carnage is a must-watch and its comic relief makes you forget once in a while that this is actually a horror film. 

31. Nope

With a sci-fi edge to it, ‘Nope,’ is definitely a yes (no pun intended). In this movie, the residents of a lonely gulch in California bear witness to some chilling and uncanny chain of events. Directed by the legendary Jordan Peele, he once again manages to bring to life a concept you never thought of before. A concept that makes you think outside the box and leaves your mind blown. Whenever you see the name, Peele, then you know it’s a must-watch! This one included. 

32. The Reef: Stalked

Another 2022 horror movie, this 93-minute long movie tells the story of Nic, whose sister is murdered. She together with her younger sister and two friends, decides to seek solace on a Pacific island by indulging in the kayaking adventure. Several hours into the trip, the women start getting stalked by a shark and must therefore work together to survive and face their fears. It’s more of a survival kind of movie and that’s actually what gives it its edge. Directed by Andrew Traucki,  this is another 2022 horror movie that’s a must-watch. 

33. Hypochondriac

In this movie that ends up giving you such a rollercoaster of emotions, a young potter’s life very soon deteriorates to chaos as he loses the function of his whole body. This is while he is being haunted by the physical manifestation of his childhood trauma. Undoubtedly, the movie revolves around his attempt to survive the whole ordeal and succeed in coming out with his sanity still intact. 

34. Bodies Bodies Bodies

Obviously, from the title, you can already tell what’s about to go down. In the film, a group of young rich friends plan a hurricane party at a remote family function. Typical of all horror movies, this party turns deadly when the backstabbing and fake friends start showing their true colours. The party ends up going very wrong and soon after, most of the characters fight for their lives. 

35. Prey

Another horror movie released in 2022, ‘ Prey’  is a 100-minute long film that has incorporated action too hence making it even more interesting. In this movie, we are introduced to Naru, a skilled warrior of the Comanche nation, who fights so hard to protect her tribe against a highly evolved and high-level predator on earth. The drama that comes about between this fearless warrior and the formidable predator makes the film very worthwhile hence it is indeed a must-watch.

36. They/Them

Directed by John Logan, this psychological horror film will also put you on the edge of your seat. It will keep you guessing and having jump scares all through. Then again, this is what always makes horror films worth the hype. In this particular story, a group of teenagers at a camp gets to endure very unsettling psychological techniques, while they are being stalked by a mysterious masked killer. They strive to survive and as you have already guessed, this is when the movie becomes really interesting.

Directed by Andrew Semans and featuring iconic actors like Rebecca Hall, Tim Roth, Grace Kaufman, and Michael Epser among many others, ‘Resurrection,’ is a true horror film that perfectly intertwines with the theme of crime. Margaret’s (the main character in the movie) life is perfect and in order. She is very independent, forward-thinking and capable. Her well-put-together life however comes crashing down when David returns and along with him, he carries the horrors of Margaret’s past. Something she would have preferred to just as well remain in the past.  

38. Orphan 2: First Kill

With a Metascore of 54, this brilliant horror film tells the story of a character named Esther who after planning a well-thought-out escape route from an Estonian psychiatric facility, doesn’t look back once she leaves. She impersonates the missing daughter of a wealthy family and by the time all the truths involved start coming out, a lot of chaos and havoc has already been caused. Directed by the talented William Bret Bell, this is another horror movie that is a must-watch. The delivery of its plot has been done so brilliantly that you cannot help but just get hooked. 

39. The Invitation

With a dark conspiracy at play, a young woman is easily swept off her feet by a person who introduces nightmares into her life. She gets to realize a very dark and gothic play at hand and she immediately works towards getting out and saving herself. Directed by Jessica M. Thompson, this 105-minute-long movie will keep you glued to it the whole time you are watching it. It has a very heavy and interesting thriller theme that makes it absolutely worthwhile to spend your time on.

There’s nothing more interesting than a horror movie with extremely funny comic themes. This movie right here is one like that and that’s what makes it a must-watch. It tells the story of characters by the name of Adam and Margo. They decide to throw a housewarming party and it is a big success. However, one couple lingers a bit more after the party and they reveal themselves to be very wealthy. As the night progresses, the drama unfolds too, and as much as it is very funny, the horror of getting to know someone’s true colours is very well captured too. Directed by Duncan Birmingham and featuring very talented actors like  Ryan Hansen, and Melissa Tang among others, ‘Who Invited Them’ is very interesting and worth the watch. 

41. The Harbinger

This movie is a whole package because it has the elements of fantasy and horror. What could possibly go wrong with such a combination? Absolutely nothing. It’s a bit of a long movie whose plot revolves around a man with dark secrets who ends up seeking the help of a Native American seer. This is after seeing his daughter being threatened with eternal damnation and hence decides to do something about it. The seer is quite unpopular hence letting you know how desperate the father is at that point. Directed by Will Klipstine and featuring very talented actors including Will himself, ‘The Harbinger’ also has some amazing reviews, and rightfully so. It is an amazing piece of creativity but kindly note that it is a PG -13; something that’s important to keep in mind. 

42. Barbarian

With a Metascore of 78, this mystery and horror/thriller movie is another that manages to surprise you. Its mode of delivery is just brilliant! ‘Barbarian’ follows the story of a woman staying at an Airbnb and discovering that the house she has rented is not exactly what it seems. Immediately you hear a house that is full of surprises in a horror movie, then you are sure that you are in for quite a ride. Featuring the legendary Bill Skarsgard, this is one movie that still manages to create waves, even a year later. 

43. Margaux

Another iconic 2022 horror movie, ‘Margaux’ follows the story of a group of college friends who rent a smart house for a weekend that will be spent on partying. Later, they begin to realize that Margaux, the name given to the house’s advanced AI system isn’t as innocent as he may appear. Again, combining the theme of sci-fi and horror always brings about surprising elements in a movie and this movie isn’t an exception. Directed by Steven C. Miller, the plot of the movie is just super and the dark twists in between will for sure make you stick with it to the very end.

Directed by Christian Tafdrup, this is another horror movie that will indeed impress you. The acting is amazing not to mention the angle its plot takes very brilliant. 

45. House of Darkness

‘House of Darkness’ is both a comedy and horror movie that will interestingly enough make you laugh and have a jump scare all at the same time. In this story, a character by the name Hap offers Mina (another character), a ride home but he has sinister plans for her. However, all that changes and Hap’s night takes a direction he never saw coming when he learns that Mina lives in a very creepy castle, and the shadowy figures he keeps seeing make it clear that he isn’t welcome. With a Metascore of 54, this is another 2022 horror movie very much worth giving a try. The plot twist is something that will indeed impress you. 

46. Pearl

The thing with Pearl is that it begins in such an innocent way that honestly you don’t see all the gory details and twists coming. Set in 1918, ‘Pearl’ is about the story of a young woman with the same name who is on the brink of madness. She decides to pursue stardom as a dancer as she is desperate to escape the life of isolation, blandness mediocrity. She wants to live the life of the farm and venture to the big city and have all her dreams come true. However, as you can imagine, things don’t exactly go as she had planned and this is when she starts her murderous spree without even caring about the consequences  

47. Goodnight Mommy

Directed by Matt Sobel and featuring some pretty talented actors like Naomi Watts, and Cameron Crovetti among others, this is another 2022 horror movie that is indeed a must-watch. Telling the story of twin brothers at their mother’s house and immediately feeling like something is off, ‘Goodnight Mommy’ has the kind of plot that will keep you guessing to the very end. Moreover, it has a brilliant mode of delivery and its musical score makes you forget that you are watching a very twisted presentation of a story. 

48. Jeepers Creepers: Reborn

Jeepers Creepers is a very popular horror franchise movie that has been around for a very long time. Thus seeing a 2022 version with an equally amazing plot was very refreshing. The movie starts off with Laine experiencing a series of premonitions associated with the urban myth of The Creeper. She strongly believes that something supernatural and unexplainable has been summoned and she’s somehow the centre of it all. It is an amazing movie that will still keep you glued to it because this is one line of movies that presents new and interesting stories every time they come out.  

49. Sissy

Directed by Hanna Barlow, ‘Sissy’ tells the story of best friends, Cecilia and Emma who run into each after a decade of having lost touch. Cecilia is invited to Emma’s bachelorette party but ends up getting stuck in a cabin with her high school bully. Something must be in the air because she is engulfed with a sense of seeking revenge and that’s where the whole drama of this movie revolves around. It’s both a comedy and horror movie that will give you a rollercoaster and mixed emotions by the time you’re done with it. 

50. Smile

This 115-minute-long mystery and horror movie is another one that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With a Metascore of 68, ‘Smile,’ tells the story of a psychiatrist who after witnessing a very traumatic and weird incident that involves a patient, becomes convinced that he is under threat by some weird and unexplainable entity. The irony is that she is the doctor and so by the end of the movie you can wonder, are people termed crazy tea crazy? Could be they just see things ‘normal’ people aren’t seeing.

In this horror movie, a struggling actor spends his weekend with a seductive demonologist in order to prepare for an audition. Of course, the flow of events soon becomes very interesting and indeed his soul becomes a devil’s workshop. Directed by the legendary and iconic actor, Chris Bon Hoffman the comic relief here and there and the whole dramatic way of delivery make it such an amazing movie. 

52. My Best Friend’s Exorcism

As much as it is a typical exorcism story, the comedy angle in ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism,’ is what sets it apart. You can be sure you’ll have a good laugh and pee your pants (okay, maybe I exaggerate) but you get the point right? Abby and Gretchen are best friends who find themselves fighting a demon who has taken residence in Gretchen’s body. It is not a very long movie but it is worth the watch. 

53. Mr. Harrigan’s Phone

Directed by the legendary John Lee Hancock, ‘Mr. Harrigan’s Phone tells the story of Craig who puts Mr. Harrigan’s phone in his pocket before burial. Craig is a teenager who befriended and did some odd jobs for Mr. Harrigan when he was alive. Craig is a lonely kid and the elderly man was his only friend. So it comes as a shock when Craig sends his dead friend a message just to ease his feelings of loneliness and actually gets a reply. Of course, the first assumption would be someone is playing with you but what if you realize that your dead friend in all actuality texted back? Pretty interesting right? 

54. Terrifier 2

In this movie, the story of the creepy and indeed terrifying Art the Clown continues. After being resurrected by a sinister entity as seen in ‘Terrifier 1,’ Art the Clown returns to Miles County where he targets a teenage girl together with her younger brother on Halloween night. Directed by Damien Leone, the movie manages to deliver just like its first part did. 

55. Deadstream

Always save the best, right? Last on our list we have ‘Deadstream,’ another mind-blowing and amazing horror movie. It’s not a very long movie, but it will absolutely keep you on the edge of your seat as you wonder what happens next. The movie tells the story of a disgraced internet personality who attempts to win back his followers by livestreaming in a haunted house.
