District 9 is a science fiction action film that was a co-production of New Zealand, the United States, and South Africa, having been adapted from Blomkamp’s 2006 short film Alive in Joburg. The film is set in Johannesburg, South Africa where a massive alien spacecraft appeared over the city years ago and landed in a remote area that was subsequently quarantined as District 9.  

The aliens, known as the Prawns, were initially welcomed by the human population, but they were soon relegated to the status of second-class citizens.
