35 Best Black Gospel Singers
Gospel music, with its wide range of styles, is a genre that is very popular in the African-American community. This is not to say that it is not enjoyed by people of other races and backgrounds, but it has its roots in the black community because enslaved Africans sang gospel songs to express their faith and hope in the face of oppression.
During the slave era, enslaved Africans brought their musical traditions to America and blended them with other forms of music styles that included gospel music, mostly hymns and spirituals. The slaves sang these songs in coded language with messages about escaping and freedom.
