25 Prominent Eagle Scouts who Changed History

Eagle Scouts is the highest rank that it achieved in the Scouts BSA program of the Boy Scouts of America. The Eagle Scout rank has been earned by over 2.5 million youth. The requirements for achieving this rank include earning at least 21 merit badges, 14 of which are mandatory for the award.

Eagle Scouts represents an elite group of individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, and character. These people come from all walks of life and have made great contributions to society in different fields. This article is going to discuss 25 prominent Eagle Scouts who changed History. Some of them include Neil Armstrong, Gerald Ford, and Steven Spielberg.

1. Neil Armstrong

Neil was an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer who was the first eagle person to walk on the moon in 1969. His Journey through scouting instilled in him valuable skills and characteristics that undoubtedly contributed to his great achievements. His famous words before he stepped onto the lunar surface were “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”

Before taking a journey to the moon, Neil had an impressive career as a test pilot and engineer. During the Korean War, he served as a Naval aviator and later he joined NASA as part of the second group of astronauts known as New Nine. He also taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati. His legacy extends beyond his moonwalk.

2. Gerald Ford

Gerald Ford who was the 38th President of the United States was an Eagle Scout. Scouting helped him learn and develop leadership skills and a sense of duty that he carried with him throughout his career. His scouting experience began while he was still a youth and he eventually graduated the rank of Eagle Scout.

During his time in the office as a president, he faced many challenges. At that term, the country was facing serious economic struggles which included inflation. He used his leadership skills to address the nation on measures they would use such as deficit spending and tax cuts to revive the economy. His efforts helped stabilize the economy and set the stage for future growth.

3. Steven Spielberg

Steven one of the most famous iconic filmmakers was an Eagle Scout. He is one of the most commercially successful directors in history. He is a recipient of many awards including Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and four Directors Guild of America Awards.  Seven of his films have been inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as “Culturally historically or aesthetically significant”.

His creativity and ability to tell stories were evident even in his youth. Scouting helped him develop his teamwork, leadership, and creativity skills. He is the co-founder of DreamWorks Pictures and continues to shape the landscape of film. 

4. Tom Brokaw

Tom Brokaw is an American retired network television journalist and author. As a journalist, he first served as the co-anchor of The Today Show from 1976 to 1981 with Jane Pauley and later he moved and worked as an anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News for 22 years. Tom is recorded to be the only person who hosted all three major NBC News programs which include The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and Meet the Press.

Other than being an actor, he is a respected author. He has written some books such as “The Greatest Generation” and “The Time of Our Lives” which are his bestselling books. The famous news anchor was an Eagle Scout. His dedication to serving the public as an anchor and commitment to telling the story of America were shaped in part by his experiences in scouting.

5. Mike Rowe

Mike is an American television host, narrator, and advocate for the skilled trades. He is well known for his work on the Discovery Channel series known as Dirty Jobs and the series Somebody’s Gotta Do It originally developed for CNN. Some of the channels he has used to narrate his programs include the Discovery Channel, The Science Channel, and National Geographic Channel.

Rowe has hosted On-air TV for American Airlines, No Relation for FX, and New York Expeditions for PBS. Mike Rowe was an Eagle Scout. His work ethic and his appreciation for all types of work were instilled in him during his time in scouting.

6. Elon Musk

Elon Musk is a businessman and investor. He is the wealthiest person in the world with an estimated net worth of 222 million dollars as of December 2023 according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index and 244 million dollars according to Forbes.

The visionary entrepreneur and founder of Tesla and SpaceX was an Eagle Scout. His intelligence and ability to think outside the box were all nurtured by his experiences in scouting.  Musk’s ambitions are audacious. He envisions colonizing Mars, creating self-driving cars, and developing neural ink technology to merge human brains with computers.

7. Stephen Sondheim

Stephen was an American composer and lyricist. He is known to be one of the most important figures in 20th century Musical Theater he is credited with reinventing the American musical. He began his career by writing the lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy. He transitioned to writing both music and lyrics for the theater. His best-known works include Company, A Little Night Music, and Sunday in the Park with George.

The Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist was an Eagle Scout. His passion for music was evident from a young age. Being a member of Eagle Scout helped him develop the discipline and focus that was necessary to succeed in his chosen field.

8. Colin Powell

Colin was an American politician, statesman, diplomat, and United States Army officer who was the 65th United States Secretary of state. He was the 15th United States national security advisor and the 12th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993. His military career was marked by steady advancement, culminating in his appointment as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1989.

9. Michael Bloomberg

Michael is an American businessman, politician, philanthropist, and author. He is the co-founder of Bloomberg L.P and was its CEO from 2014 until 2023. He served as the mayor of New York City for three terms from 2002 to 2013.

Since June 2022, he served as chair of the Defense Innovation Board which is an independent advisory board that provides recommendations on artificial intelligence, software, data, and digital modernization to the United States Department of Defense. He was an Eagle Scout. His leadership skills, problem-solving ability, and commitment to public services were all honed during his time in scouting.

10. Bill Gates

Bill Gates is an American businessman, investor, philanthropist, and writer best known for co-founding the software known as Microsoft together with his friend Paul Allen. While working at Microsoft, he held the positions of chairman, chief executive officer (CEO), president, and chief software architect while also being its largest individual shareholder until May 2014.

 He was a major entrepreneur in the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s. Bill was an Eagle Scout. Gates’s intelligence, drive, and ability to think outside the box were all nurtured by his experiences in scouting.

11. Charles Schwab

Charles is an American investor and financial executive. He is the founder and chairman of the Charles Schwab Corporation. He pioneered discount sales of equity securities. The company became the largest discount securities dealer in the United States. He is ranked by Forbes as the 210th richest man in the world.

Schwab’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to innovation were evident from a young age scouting helped him develop skills that are important to succeed in business.

12. Justin Timberlake

Justin is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor.  He is regarded as a pop culture icon. He is married to Jessica Biel and has two children. He has been active in the industry since 1992. Justin is a recipient of many awards including ten Grammy Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards, three Brit Awards, and nine Billboard Music Awards.

Justin is one of the members of Eagle Scouts his creativity, work ethic, and commitment to community services were all shaped in part by his experiences in scouting.

13. Derek Jeter

Derek is a retired American professional baseball player who spent his entire 20-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career at shortstop for the New York Yankees.  People regard him as one of the greatest shortstops of all time. He began utilizing his talent at a young age. He is a 14-time All-Star, a five-time World Series champion, and a five-time Gold Glove Award winner.

He was a member of Eagle Scout and you can tell where he learned so many skills. His dedication to hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship were all instilled in him during his time in scouting.

14. George Tenet

George is an American intelligence official and academic who served as the Director of Central Intelligence for the United States Central Intelligence Agency as well as a distinguished professor in the practice of Diplomacy at Georgetown University. 

He held the position of the DCI from July 1997 to July 2004 hence making him the second longest-serving director in the agency’s history. George was an Eagle Scout. His leadership skills, strategic thinking, and commitment to national security were all shaped in part by his experiences in scouting.

15. Earl Woods

Earl was the father of the American professional golfer known as Tiger Woods. He started coaching his son at a very young age. He published two books about the process.  He once served as a U.S. Army infantry officer on two tours of duty in South Vietnam and retired with the rank of Lieutenant colonel. While in college, he was a baseball player.

He pushed his son to achieve his full potential by setting big goals and demanding relentless practice. Earl Woods was an Eagle Scout. The skills he instilled in his son were what he was instilled while he was still a member of Eagle Scout.

16. John Glenn

John was an American Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut, businessman, and politician. He was the third American person in space and the first American to orbit the Earth by circling it three times in 1962.  Way before joining NASA, John was a distinguished fighter pilot in World War II, the Chinese Civil War, and the Korean War.

His courage, intelligence, and commitment to service were all evident at his young age. Eagle scouting helped him develop the skills and character necessary to become a NASA astronaut.

17. Walter Cronkite

Walter was an American broadcast journalist who served as anchorman for the CBS Evening News for 19 years. The opinion poll named him “the most trusted man in America” during the 1960s and 1970s. he was a recipient of numerous critical acclaim such as the Peabody Awards, George Pork Award, and Emmy Award among many others. He was active in the industry and served appropriately for all his life until he met his death in 2009.

Walter was a member of Eagle Scout. His dedication to journalism, integrity, and fairness were all shaped in part by his experiences in scouting. He will forever be remembered and has left a positive legacy.

18. Henry Ross Perot Sr.

Henry Ross was an American business magnate, politician, and philanthropist. Henry was the founder and CEO of Electronic Data Systems and Perot Systems. In 1992 he ran as an independent candidate in the United States presidential election. As a philanthropist, he contributed large amounts to various causes such as education, healthcare, and veteran’s affairs.

He is remembered as a self-made billionaire, a successful entrepreneur, and a maverick in both politics and business. He was a member of Eagle Scout. Scouting shaped the leadership skills, dedication, and commitment that he had in his business.

19. Stephen Bechtel Jr

Stephen was an American billionaire, businessman, civil engineer, and co-owner of the Bechtel Corporation. Stephen was known for expanding the global footprint of the corporation through several of its international projects. Some of the projects he executed under the leadership of the company included King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Jubal Industrial City in Saudi Arabia, oil platforms in the North Sea, and Liquefied natural gas plants in Algeria and the United Arab Emirates.

He is remembered to be one of the most successful businessmen. Stephen was a member of Eagle Scout and it really shaped him to be the successful person he was.

20. Sam Walton

Sam Walton was an American businessman and entrepreneur. He is the founder of Walmart which is one of the world’s largest and most successful retail chains. He once served in the military during World War II. He opened the first Walmart Discount store in Rogers, Arkansas in 1962.

Some of the strategies he used in order to grow include keeping costs low, using advanced information technology for inventory management, and negotiating with suppliers to lower prices. As a member of Eagle Scouts, shaped him to be a great man and instilled the necessary skills that he needed to carry in his projects and life.

21. James Lovell

James Lovell born on 25th March 1928 is a retired American astronaut and a former NASA astronaut. He is well known for his great contributions to the Apollo program especially for his role as the commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission. He joined NASA in 1962 as part of the second group of astronauts known as the New Line.

The four space missions that he took part in during his astronaut career include Gemini7 in 1965, Gemini 12 in 1966, Apollo8 in 1968, and Apollo13 in 1970. After retiring from NASA and the Navy he pursued a career in business and public speaking.

22. Donald Rumsfeld

Donald born on 9th July 1932 was an American politician, government official, and businessman who served in various high-profile roles within the U.S. government. His political career began in the 1960s when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1962 and served until 1969.

 Later, he was appointed as the Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity under President Nixon and later served as the White House Chief of Staff. He retired from politics in 2006 after the Democrats gained control of Congress.

23. Harrison Ford

Harrison born on 13th July 1942 is an American actor and film producer who gained worldwide fame from his iconic roles. His breakthrough came with his role as Han Solo in George Lucas’s space opera, “Star Wars: Episode IV- a New Hope in 1977.

Some of the films he has acted in include Blade Runner, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and Fugitive among many others. He is a recipient of many critical acclaims and a great source of inspiration to those aspiring to be actors and film producers. Harrison was a member of Eagle Scout and it really shaped him by instilling relevant skills.

24. Rex Tillerson

Rex is an American businessman and former government official who served as the 69th United States Secretary of State under President Donald Trump. His service as Secretary of State came to an end in March 2018 when President Trump announced his dismissal through Twitter.

After leaving the government, Tillerson stayed out of the public eye and maintained a low profile. He was a member of Eagle Scout, and it really instilled rightful skills in him.

25. Reid Wiseman

Reid Wiseman is an American astronaut, engineer, and naval aviator born on 11th November 1975. He serves as Chief of the Astronaut office until 14th November 2022. He was a member of Eagle Scout and it instilled resourceful skills in him.

He has been successful all through his career and a great source of inspiration to young people who are trying to figure out their career path.
