The Nakoda people, also recognized as the Stoney Indians, share a cultural and linguistic kinship with the Assiniboine First Nation. The Nakoda are believed to have separated from the Assiniboine in the mid-1700s, and both groups roamed extensive territories encompassing the prairies and mountainous regions from western Alberta to British Columbia.

The secluded Valley of the Ten Peaks was initially part of the Nakoda’s ancestral land. Over time, however, all but three of these mountains were renamed to notable figures, including Samuel Allen himself.
