15 Facts About Grasshoppers

When it comes to the whole of the ecosystem, as far as insects are concerned, grasshoppers are fascinating creatures that have continued to capture the attention of human beings over the years. These insects are especially known for their unique ability to leap great distances and produce a characteristic buzzing sound are one to learn from so much every time you study them or just simply read about them. Moreover, grasshoppers are found in different and various habitats all around the world. Scientifically, they belong to the order known as Orthoptera which is also the category that has crickets and locusts. Having said that, let’s take a look at some of the facts (you probably didn’t even know about) about grasshoppers.

However, throughout the world, there are over eleven thousand species of grasshoppers which are all pretty diverse. They all come in wide ranges of shapes, sizes, and colours. Different species are also found in different habitats as you will find some thriving in grasslands while others in forests. It just depends on the species you’re talking about.

2. They have mind-blowing jumping abilities

Never underestimate a grasshopper’s ability to jump from one place to another. Thanks to their powerful hind legs these insects are capable of jumping a distance that sometimes reaches up to 20 times their body length. This ability usually helps them to evade predators hence acting as a kind of defense mechanism for them and also easily find food. This kind of lets you know that when it comes to animals, every body feature they have plays a very crucial role in their survival.

3. Grasshoppers produce their distinctive sounds

Have you ever wondered what the difference between male grasshoppers and female grasshoppers is? It could be a difficult one but male grasshoppers typically use their wings and legs to create chirping sounds and this behavior is known as stridulation. This actually serves multiple purposes including attracting mates and establishing territorial boundaries. Hence, the major difference would be the chirping sounds they make. That’s how even the females can be able to tell.

The one unique thing about grasshoppers is that, unlike other insects like butterflies that go through complete metamorphosis, they instead experience gradual changes as they grow. They start from an egg as nymphs and gradually develop into adult grasshoppers through a series known as molts. They don’t go through the stages of egg, larva, pupa then adult like most of the typical insects.

5. Grasshoppers are herbivores

Grasshoppers are typically herbivores as they reed on pure plant materials like leaves, stems, and grass. Their physiology has been made in such a way that their strong haws allow them to chew and consume a wide variety of plant species. They can actually feed on any kind of plant that’s there as long as isn’t poisonous.

6. Grasshoppers have compound eyes

This typically enables them to spot predators and potential mates from their point of view. You can imagine how great their peripheral view usually is.

Did you know that grasshoppers have the ability to regenerate lost limbs? If this was possible in human beings life would be so much better and hospital bills would be an alien concept. Anyway, with grasshoppers, if they lose a leg due to maybe an injury or an attack, they have that ability to regrow a replacement. This ability is essential for their survival in the wild. They need to live longer and have a survival tactic and this usually comes in handy.

8. Grasshoppers are known for their high reproductive rates

It’s like grasshoppers have a unique way of living because their physiological abilities. In this instance for example, female grasshoppers usually lay large quantities of eggs which hatch into nymphs. This strategy of reproductory ability ensures the survival of this specie because annually, so many grasshoppers fall victim to different types of predators. Hence as a survival instinctive feature, this comes in handy.

9. Grasshoppers are a valuable food source for other animals

Most animals, inclusive of birds, reptiles and mammals typically rely on grasshoppers as a source of nutrition. The high protein content they have makes them a very important of the food chain hence why they are actually part of an ecosystem that cannot really be extinct.

10. Grasshoppers can be both beneficial and harmful to crops

Remember the bible story where God unleashed grasshoppers as a punishment and they destroyed so many crops? Well, they can be very destructive but on the same note, they can also be beneficial. How?
