15 Cute Facts About German Shepherds

It is understandable why the elegant German Shepherd is the second-most popular breed recognized by the AKC. This breed excels as assistance dogs, guard dogs for families, and police and military dogs because of their intelligence, courage, and devotion.

Amazingly, Max von Stephanitz created the breed in 1899 from a variety of old-fashioned German herding dogs. It was initially developed as a herding dog to handle sheep. However, Max presented this smart, simple-to-train dog to the police and military as the necessity for herding dogs were being replaced by urbanization.

Since then, it has been used in a wide range of occupations, such as disability assistance, search and rescue, law enforcement, and military operations. It is frequently maintained as a companion dog and had the second-highest number of yearly registrations in 2013, according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

let’s learn more facts about these dogs;

2. German Shepherds are Naturally Herding Dogs

Herding sheep from one field to the next and keeping an eye on flocks of sheep were the original jobs for German Shepherds. Fast reflexes and the capacity to move quickly when necessary were requirements for such work. For the task, this breed excelled.

At their full sprint, German Shepherds have a top speed of 32 mph. Instead of running, though, when herding, they trot at a speed of around 20 mph. Sheep herding was their specialty, but this breed would go on to become excellent at so much more.
