When we first hear the term “climate,” some questions pop into our heads, such as what the climate actually is. Climate does change, yeah! So what exactly is climate change? And ultimately, what do scientists do and how do they affect the climate? The climate is a region’s averaged long-term weather pattern which can change at any given time. Climate change occurs when the weather changes over time, and such conditions as drought, severe fires, floodings, and storms happen which can affect the social and environmental determinants of health. The study of these certain conditions is known as climatology. These scientists have over the years, educated us on climate through their dedication to studying the climate and ways to curb its change. Numerous of them such as James Hansen, who helped raise awareness of global warming among others have been of great impact on the world we live in today even though they don’t get the recognition they deserve. Here are 10 of the most famous climate scientists.

1. James Hansen

This is one of the most well-known climate scientists in history today. James Edward Hansen works as an American professor instructing the Program on Climate Science, Awareness, and Solutions of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. Hansen, the “father of global warming” is known for his research in climatology, his Congressional testimony on climate change in 1988 that helped raise broad awareness of global warming, and his advocacy of action to avoid dangerous climate change. He is currently working as a climate activist to diminish the effects of global warming which has occasionally got him arrested.

2. Judith Curry

Judith A. Curry stands among the well-known climatologists. She has worked in big institutions as a climatologist. For most of her career, she has had great research interests in hurricanes, remote sensing, atmospheric modeling, polar climates, air-sea interactions, climate models, and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for atmospheric research. Also, she has become known as one of the most outspoken scientists in the United States arguing that there is little to be done about natural climate variance which as a result, she was academically, pretty much finished off and essentially unhirable. However, this didn’t slow her down.

3. John Christy

John Raymond Christy works as a climate scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) whose main interests are satellite remote sensing of global climate and global climate change. He jointly with Roy Spencer developed the first successful satellite temperature record which he is widely known for.

4. Svante Arrhenius

Svante August Arrhenius was a Swedish Physicist who received the status of a chemist because he was among the founders of physical chemistry science. He became the first Swedish to be honored with a Nobel prize for chemistry in 1903. His most known climatology work was being the first to determine the amount to which increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide are responsible for the Earth’s rising surface temperature using physical chemistry principles. As a result, his work led to the development of the current climate change.

5. Peter Kalmus

Peter Kalmus is a well-known American scientist who works as a data scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory as an associate project scientist at UCLA’s Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science & Engineering. In addition to his scientific work, he is the writer of an award-winning book Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution. He is the founder of the website noflyclimatesci.org and co-founder of the app Earth Hero: Climate Change. Kalmus is a well-known media climate activist who encourages people to speak on the need for climate action. As of April 2022, he was the most followed climate scientist on Twitter.

6. Michael E. Mann

Michael Evan Mann stands among the most well-known scientists in history. He is well known for his contribution to the scientific understanding of historic climate change based on the temperature record of the past thousand years. It should be enough to know Mann for his inventive approach to detecting trends in previous climate change and isolating climatic signals from noisy data. He took part in writing the “Observed Climate Variability and Change” chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Third Scientific Assessment Report published in 2001.

7. Jennifer Francis

Jennifer Ann Francis’s interest in climate science has brought her a position as a senior scientist at Woods Hole Research Center. She has a high knowledge of using satellite data to study the tremendous changes occurring in the Arctic and how the planet’s temperate zones, where billions of people dwell, are being affected by the Arctic’s excessive warming. Her research implies that rapid Arctic warming may be connected to shifting weather patterns resulting in more persistent weather regimes capable of generating high temperatures and/or precipitation.

8. Katharine Hayhoe

Katharine Hayhoe is a Canadian atmospheric scientist whose work focuses on figuring out how climate change affects humans and the environment. She is an Endowed Chair in Public Policy and Public Law in the Texas Tech University Department of Political Science a Paul Whitfield Horn Distinguished Professor. Hayhoe has been the Chief Scientist for The Nature Conservancy since 1021 where she leads and coordinates the organization’s scientific efforts.

9. Kevin Trenberth

Kevin Trenberth is a well-known Scholar of the Climate Analysis Section at the US NCAR National Center for Atmospheric Research. Did I also mention that he was the lead author of the IPCC Scientific Assessment of Climate Change in 2001 and 2007 consecutively? He also has served on the Scientific Steering Group for the Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) program.

10. Drew Shindell 

Drew Shindell is a physicist and a climate specialist known for his interest in the studies of climate change, air quality, and links between science and policy. Shindell has significantly contributed to the establishment of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, a group of nations along with many intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations dedicated to implementing actions that simultaneously reduce air pollution and mitigate climate change.

Climate scientists lay the groundwork for understanding how climate change affects our lives and what we can do to stop or reverse the process. The study of climate science examines how climate change will impact people worldwide, not only why it is significant. Rising global temperatures have the ability to alter local climate conditions, shifting precipitation patterns, and raise sea levels.
