While many people focus solely on the heroes in the movies, it is the villains who make every movie an interesting adventure through their malicious activities. Over the years, villains began receiving much-deserved attention alongside their sworn enemies. Cutting across every category of films from action to drama, war, or science fiction, the villains have played their part to make these films interesting. These characters also range from mercenaries, and war masterminds, to witches and wizards. Some serial killers have made cinema halls cold places for faint-hearted viewers. The science fiction villains with immortal nature make the heroes look weak and work extra hard to destroy these killers. The villains evoke our feelings by making us hate them, and place our support on the heroes hoping for better endings. However, their ominous presence, charisma, and hunger for human blood make villains the driving force behind some of the most powerful movies in the world. For every strong hero, there is always an opposite and equally strong force of destruction. The combination of the two opposite great forces makes every movie worth watching. In the journey to explore some of the historical great villains, we discover some of the people who made films more interesting.

1. Dart Vader

Dart Vader was voiced by Jams Earl Jones in the Star Wars movies that were first produced in 1980. He is thought to be one of the greatest film villains of all time for his on-screen appearances that frighten the viewers. His armor is strong for any person to pull off which makes him almost invincible. He is the embodiment of both evil and dangerous beings that would take on and kill all his enemies. His voice and appearance make him frightening in every scene on the screen.

2. The Joker

Heath Ledger displayed one of the most dangerous and cold villains when he played the Joker in the 2008 movie The Dark Knight. The Joker is a villain that stands in the way of Gotham City guardians including Batman as Bruce Wayne played by Christian Bale. Wayne tries to protect the city alongside the police department but they face an inhuman villain who is happy to see the world burn to the ground. As a clown, nobody would take him seriously. He is a mastermind that believes in anarchy and would do everything to destroy the people and the city. Named the clown prince of crime, the Joker is one of the greatest villains in the history of films.

3. Sergeant Andrew Scott

Who else would play the most dangerous villain in an action movie better than Dolph Lundgren? He was Sergeant Scott in the 1992 movie Universal Soldiers starring Jean Clade Van Dame who played Luc Deveraux. Scott and Luc are both former U.S. Army soldiers who took part in the Vietnam War. Luc was killed in the war and later brought back to life by the Universal Soldiers project. However, Scott became insane and went on a killing spree with the desire to take over the project. He kills every person he comes across including civilians and all who supposedly work with the project. Luc has to deal with this rogue soldier who has lost his mind and is relentless in killing people.

4. Agent Smith

Agent Smith is played by Hugo Weaving in the film franchise The Matrix. The franchise has four films, the first produced in 1999 and the last in 2021. Hugo played Agent Smith in the first three films. He is a program that was designed to make sure that human beings don’t get out of the matrix. The film, the Matrix was created to imprison humanity in virtual reality. Although Agent Smith was created to serve the world, he tries to free himself and therefore evolves into a dangerous creature that wants to control the whole world. He becomes one of the most dangerous villains in history.

5. The Wicked Witch of the West

In the 1939 film The Wizard of the Oz, the Wicked Witch played by Margaret Hamilton was one of the most controlling villains in the film. Her appearance makes her look like an evil witch even before she performs witchcraft. Her green skin, long and pointy nose, pointed hat, and stuff makes her look like magic. She terrorizes people in the land of Oz. She has been recreated over time making her one of the pioneers of the character.

6. Alex Forrest

Alex Forrest is played by Glenn Close in the film Fatal Attraction in the film’s golden age. Forrest is a dangerous woman who easily becomes obsessed with men and would cause harm or death. She meets a married man at a party and becomes obsessed with him in a few days. Forrest also has a record of evil in the past making her a dangerous encounter to the people she meets. The movie became one of the best-selling in the 1990s.

7. Blofeld

The movie franchise James Bond has been one of the best for many years since its first production in 1953. Played by Ian Fleming, the hero encountered the fiercest villain when he met Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Blofeld is the leader of the most dangerous terrorist organization in the world. He is obsessed with power and would do anything to control the world. This villain is relentless and would not hesitate to cause economic issues, or even cause the third world war to achieve his goal. His obsession makes him one of the greatest villains ever.

8. Han

Shih Kien is the figure behind Han in Bruce Lee’s final movie Enter the Dragon. In the 1973 film, the hand is a former monk who abandoned his traditional lie and fled to an island where he is the leader. He is involved in human trafficking, selling drugs, and several murders. He also hosts martial arts tournaments occasionally to recruit the best fighters to be his guards. Bruce Lee goes on an undercover mission as a fighter to expose the villain. Han also has an artificial hand where he attaches weapons whenever he is in a fight. Featuring Bruce Lee’s movie made Han one of the best villains in history.

9. T-1000

T-1000 is played by Robert Patrick in the science fiction film Terminator 2 also known as Judgement Day. The hero is Arnold Schwarzenegger who has to defeat a body-changing villain who can turn into a metal. Arnold has to protect the future of humanity which T-1000 has been sent to destroy by killing the future leaders. The villain captures people’s attention with his inhuman nature and willingness to destroy everyone who stands in his way.

10. Hans Gruber

Alan Rickman in the 1988 film Die Hard was possibly the toughest villain in both his choice of words and in action. He is remembered for putting the words “I’m going to count to three. There will not be a four.”  The hero in the film is Bruce Willis who plays John McClane, an NYPD cop. Gruber seems to always be ahead of the cops and would always come up with ways to compromise the situation.

The world of film production has seen several heroes who used their skills to save the world however, there has also been the opposite force of villains who have played their roles to perfection. The industry has seen villains who matched the power possessed by the heroes and sometimes we have witnessed villains who are better and stronger than heroes. The masterminds, power-obsessed and merciless villains who are happy to see humanity erased from Earth have made films captivating to the viewers. We have witnessed different types of villains in history whose talent will be remembered for centuries to come.
