Stephen was a deacon and martyr whose story was introduced in the Book of Acts. He is among the seven deacons who were chosen to serve the church in Jerusalem. Stephen is described as a man of great faith and wisdom as well as a man who was filled with the Holy Spirit. He gained his reputation for being eloquent and bold in his preachings. 

Stephen preached to both Jews and Gentiles and he also challenged the religious authorities of his day. Even though Stephen is noted for being a strong preacher, the Sanhedrin, the Jewish high court, didn’t appreciate his teachings. His role in the church made him a prominent figure. Stephen performed miracles such as healing the sick as well as raising the dead.

He was full of faith and the Holy Spirit which meant that he had deep trust in God. Stephen was empowered by God’s Spirit to do great things and that was how he was able to heal people. He was also able to communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ in a compelling way and was able to defend his faith to critics.

Stephen is noted for being a powerful preacher because he converted many people to Christianity and performed miracles that helped him to authenticate his message to people.

His teachings led the leaders to have him arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin which is the Jewish high court.

It is not recorded how many people were healed by Stephen. However, in Acts Chapter 7 verses 10-16, Stephen heals a lame man who had been begging at the temple gate for over 40 years. The passage shows just how powerful the power of God and Stephen’s faith was. Through this passage, Stephen is seen as a  great healer. Even though he mainly focused on preaching the gospel, he would also perform miracles.

Scholars have noted that Stephen’s speech was controversial because it challenged authority and he talked about Jesus as the Messiah after he was crucified.

Stephen’s life story shows us to stand for what we believe in even though we are put in difficult situations. Stephen also reminds us that God is always with us even though we are persecuted and judged for our faith. 10. Stephen Died a Martyr

When he was brought before the Jewish high court also known as the Sanhedrin in order to face his charges of blasphemy. Stephen gave a powerful speech in his defense but he rebuked the Sanhedrim for their unbelief. This greatly enraged the Sanhedrin and they decided to stone him to death. Through this, Stephen became the first martyr who died for his courage and faith.
