Poland is a multiparty democratic state. The president is the highest authority and plays the role of Head of State. Ministers administer government tasks. They are appointed by the president who assigns them the jurisdictions they should serve under.

The country has two chambers of Parliament, the upper chamber which is the Senate, and the lower one the Sejm. Members in both are elected by popular vote every four years. The Polish Constitution is supreme and dictates law and order.

Here are 10 of the most famous Polish politicians that have influenced the country’s politics over the years. Some of the politicians are of Polish descent but have led the politics of other countries outside of Poland. Check them out.

1. Lech Wałęsa

Wałęsa was born on September 29, 1943. He worked as a Shipyard electrician where his passion for the welfare of workers was evident.

He became a trade-union activist and led the Solidarity movement which aimed at fighting for pro-democracy. Wałęsa’s mission annoyed the supporters of Communism. He got arrested several times in the quest for democracy.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983. But his wife accepted it on his behalf because he feared that the Poland government may have rejected his return to the country if took the prize in person.

His notable political effect in Poland was his ascending to power as president in 1990. He was head of state up to 1995. He was the first Polish president elected in a democratic process.

During his presidency, Walesa transformed the nation into a free-market economy. He prioritized diplomatic relations and security in the country. He managed to reduce foreign debt at great length.

He partnered with intergovernmental military agencies like the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). This was helpful in his negotiations to have Soviet troops withdrawn from Poland.

He was a Polish politician remembered for opposing the communist rule in Poland. He led the Supreme Audit Office from 1992 until 1995.

He was Minister of Justice from 2000 to 2001 and the Public Prosecutor General. His highest political offices held were from 2002 to 2005, as Mayor of Warsaw and President.

He became Poland’s president in 2005 and held the position until 2010. He died in office in a plane crash. His presidential tenure brought great foreign relations to Poland. He prioritized the energy security of the country and was committed to resolving the problem.

In Israel, they admired him because he promoted Holocaust awareness among the youth of Poland. He lived from June 18, 1949, to April 10, 2010.

3. Donald Tusk

Tusk is a well-known Polish politician born in Gdańsk, northern Poland on April 22, 1957. His political life began in the 1990s when he was elected to join the country’s lower chamber of Parliament, the Sejm.

He later became the deputy speaker of the Sejm. He was also elected to the Senate in 1997 where he later became deputy speaker in the house.

From 2007 to 2014, Tusk was Prime Minister of Poland. The 14th to hold that position and the 3rd longest-serving after Józef Cyrankiewicz and Piotr Jaroszewicz.

He contested for president of Poland in 2005 but lost to Lech Kaczyński. Tusk was elected president of the EPP- European People’s Party on November 20, 2019.

4. David Ben-Gurion

Gurion was born on October 16, 1886, in Płońsk, Poland. He was a prominent political figure in Israel during his years. The first holder of the office of the prime minister when Israel became a nation.

He was the preeminent Jewish leader for his community of Mandatory Palestine then under British rule. He was the community’s leader from 1935 until 1948 when Israel became a State.

His leadership went on up to 1963. Though he took a brief break from 1954 to 1955. Throughout his life, he was a relevant figure in Jewish politics including supporting Zionism. This championed for Jewish people to be given a homeland.

Ben-Gurion headed the World Zionist Organization starting in 1946. He left politics in 1970 following his retirement. His death came three years later in 1973 after battling a cerebral hemorrhage.

5. Horst Köhler

Köhler was born in Poland on February 22, 1943. His Polish descent was not a hindrance to his successful political path in Germany. He rose to the presidency in 2004 serving the country for six years until his term ended in 2010.

The economist by profession served in the banking and civil service sectors before becoming president. Starting in 1998 he was the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development president until 2000.

He led the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 2000 up to 2004. In  2012, Köhler got the position of UN’s Secretary-General for the Post-2015 Development Agenda. He held the position for about a year ending in 2013.

6. Paul von Hindenburg

Hindenburg was born in Posen, Poland on October 2, 1847. He was a key figure in World War I as he was the leader of the Imperial German Army.

This military giant joined German politics and became president of the country in 1934. In his reign, he was able to seize the power of the Nazis in January 1933. He died in office as President in 1934.

7. Jarosław Kaczyński

Kaczyński’s eminence in Polish politics is factual. He is a Poland native-born in 1949. He is the twin brother of Lech Kaczyński (earlier mentioned on the list).

He became Poland’s prime minister from 2006 to 2007 during his brother’s presidential regime. He sought election in the 2010 presidential elections after his brother’s death but lost to Bronisław Komorowski.

Jarosław is of note worth in Poland politics ranked as a Chief of state. This was a title of honor during Poland’s second republic referring to the head of state. Jarosław Kaczyński earned this glory after the Law and Justice party (PiS) was victorious in the 2015 elections.

The party’s win dominated both parliamentary and presidential elections. Kaczyński being the leader of the party received the honor.

His political popularity saw him appointed as Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister in 2020. This role entailed oversight of the ministries of defense, interior, and justice.

8. Józef Piłsudski

Piłsudski lived from December 5, 1867, to  May 12, 1935. He was Poland’s first Marshal starting in 1920. He was Chief of State(head of state then) serving from 1918 to 1922.

He was a significant politician in the Second Polish Republic. He served as Minister of Military Affairs during that time, 1926 to 35. Though some people held that he was a de facto leader.

9. Mieszko I of Poland

He took over Poland’s leadership from his father in about 960. He founded the Duchy of Poland. This was the first independent Polish state.

His grandfather came from the noble Piast which was the first dynasty that took over leadership of Poland. His father also became a political leader. Mieszko I and his generations continued leadership of the Piast dynasty.  He lived from c. 930 when he was born until his death on May 25, 992.

10. Casimir III the Great

He was born on April 30, 1310, and lived up to November 5, 1370. He was the end of the Piast nobility ruling. He ruled as King of Ruthenia from 1340. He retained his title through the Galicia-Volhynia Wars. He was committed to prosperity and wealth creation during his reign.

He put up a judicial system and was involved in a lot of building with the famous being the Jagiellonian University that he founded. It was the University of Krakow then. The institution boasts a pioneering university in Poland as well as across the globe.

He was succeeded by King Louis I of Hungary. Louis, I was his nephew, and his closest male heir because Casimir had no sons.

There are other prominent Polish politicians worth noting. They are such as Władysław Gomułka, Zbigniew Brzezinski and Wojciech Jaruzelski. Others of political significance in Poland are Władysław IV Vasa, Bolesław I the Brave and Casimir IV Jagiellon. The Władysław III of Poland, Sigismund II Augustus and Bolesław III Wrymouth are political note worth’s among most famous Polish politicians.
