Omaha continues to produce some of the most gifted people in a variety of fields as the county seat of Douglas County. These people have achieved global fame because of a variety of factors, including the arts, culture, business, sports, and so on.

Omahans have made their mark on the world stage and are well-known not just in Nebraska but all over the world, boasting an endless list of influential and well-known figures. These people have used their creativity to enthrall large audiences and have used their roots in Omaha to become world leaders.

1. Malcolm X

Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, was an African-American Muslim minister and civil rights activist. He was the fourth of eight siblings and was born on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska. Louise Helen Little and Earl Little were his parents.

During the civil rights movement, he was a prominent figure. He was the Nation of Islam’s spokesman until 1964, and he was a vocal advocate for black empowerment and the promotion of Islam within the black community.

2. Warren Buffett

Warren Buffet is one of the world’s wealthiest individuals and possibly the most powerful philanthropist. He is known as the ‘Oracle of Omaha,’ thanks to his charitable contributions to the people of Omaha and Nebraska in general. He has given billions of dollars to organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and has promised to give away over 99% of his fortune.

A giving hand is a receiving hand, and he is without a doubt the world’s fifth-wealthiest person, with an estimated net worth of $106 billion as of January 2023. He is currently the CEO and Chair of Berkshire Hathaway, which several companies including the global battery manufacturer Duracell are part of.

3. Marlon Brando

The role earned him an Academy Award nomination and put him in the front row of Hollywood’s leading men. He went on to appear in several films, winning numerous awards along the way. His bad-boy image did not make him unpopular, especially among women.

 Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. was an American politician who served as the 38th president of the United States from 1974 to 1977. Without winning an election, he held the offices of President and Vice President of the United States. He was elected by Richard Nixon to serve as the 40th Vice President in 1973, and when the president resigned, he assumed that position.

He was unable to land a full-time job. He did, after all, take over a government beset by issues and during a period of intense political turbulence. After forgiving Richard Nixon, a participant in the infamous Watergate scandal, he gained even more notoriety. 

5. Gabrielle Union

Gabrielle Union is an Omaha-born actress, activist, businesswoman, and writer. She was praised highly by critics for her performance in the movie Neo Ned. In addition to having her own clothing line, cosmetics, and watch collection, she is an author and businesswoman.

The year’s “Best Book by a Black Author” award went to her book We’re Going To Need More Wine. She was assaulted at her place of employment, which led her to become a fierce activist and supporter of assault. 

6. Terence Crawford

Terence Allan Crawford is an American professional boxer who comes from Omaha, Nebraska. In addition to the WBO welterweight title, which he has held since 2018, Terence Crawford has won world championships in three different weight divisions.

He held the WBO and Ring magazine lightweight titles from 2014 to 2015, and from 2015 to 2017 he also held the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, Ring, and WBO light welterweight titles. Since Kostya Tszyu in 2004, he was the first light welterweight champion to hold an undisputed title.

7. Fred Astaire

Famously known as Fred Astaire, Frederick Austerlitz was an American dancer, actor, singer, choreographer, and presenter. The “greatest popular-music dancer of all time” is how many people describe him. He performed as an actor, singer, musician, and choreographer, among other things.

He is regarded as one of the best in his field and has earned the respect of legends including Michael Jackson, Gregory Hines, George Balanchine, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Margot Fonteyn, Bon Fosse, and Gene Kelly. He was renowned for using dance to express any emotion. His methods exuded elegance, brilliance, and precision.

From Omaha, Nebraska, Joelle Joanie “JoJo” Siwa is an American dancer, singer, actress, and YouTuber. She is well-known for her singles “Boomerang” and “Kid in a Candy Store,” as well as for her two seasons of co-starring on Dance Moms with her mother, Jessalynn Siwa. She is also a savvy businesswoman and has been selling her goods and accessories with success in shops all over the world. 

9. Andy Roddick

American tennis player Andrew Stephen Roddick was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and played professionally from 2000 to 2015. He is a major champion, having won the 2003 US Open. In each of Roddick’s previous four major final appearances (Wimbledon in 2004, 2005, 2009, and the US Open in 2006), Federer, his rival, defeated him.

For nine years (2002–2010), Roddick finished in the top 10 at the end of the year, winning five Masters titles. The 2007 U.S. Davis Cup team’s successful campaign to victory also benefited greatly from his contributions.

Sting, real name Steve Borden, is an American professional wrestler and former bodybuilder from Omaha who is currently affiliated with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and serves as Darby Allin’s mentor. His career spanned five decades: the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, and he is regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. He finished his career with a total of 15 world championship victories.

Elliott Smith was the stage name of Steven Paul Smith, an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on August 6, 1969, but he spent his formative years in Duncanville, Texas, before relocating to Portland, Oregon. 

Smith played a variety of instruments, but his main one was the guitar. In addition to being a heavy drinker and drug user, he also suffered from depression and ADHD. His battles with drug addiction and mental illness had an impact on his life and work and frequently showed up in his lyrics.

Elliott Smith passed away from two chest stab wounds on October 21st, 2003 in Los Angeles.

American actor Nicholas King Nolte is from Omaha, Nebraska. He was nominated for three Academy Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award, and he was known for playing the leading man in both dramas and romances. He also won a Golden Globe. Nolte first rose to fame thanks to his performance in the ABC miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man (1976), for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

His performance in The Prince of Tides (1991) earned him the Golden Globe for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. The Prince of Tides (1991), Affliction (1998), and Warrior (2011) all garnered him three Academy Award nominations.

13. Montgomery Clift

American actor Edward Montgomery Clift was born in Omaha. He was a four-time Oscar nominee who specialized in playing “moody, sensitive young men,” according to The New York Times. Clift was one of the first actors to be invited to study in the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg and Elia Kazan; he was regarded as one of the original method actors in Hollywood along with Marlon Brando and James Dean (though Clift disassociated himself from the term).

From 1959 to 1975, Robert Gibson, a right-handed pitcher from the United States, spent his entire Major League Baseball career with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was from Omaha, Nebraska, and was well-known for being incredibly competitive.

Gibson finished with 251 victories, 3,117 strikeouts, and an earned run average of 2.91. He was a two-time World Series champion, a nine-time All-Star, and the 1968 National League Most Valuable Player. He also won two Cy Young Awards.

Jaime King is an American model and actress who was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Because another Jaime—the older, back then more well-known model Jaime Rishar—was already represented by her agency, King used the identities Jamie King and James King throughout her modeling career and early film appearances. King received the moniker from her parents when she was a little child.

16. Wade Boggs

Boggs played the third baseman in the major leagues of baseball before retiring. He played in Major League Baseball for 18 seasons, mostly with the Boston Red Sox. He also had stints with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and New York Yankees. He defeated the Atlanta Braves in the 1996 World Series while playing for the New York Yankees. He had a career batting average of 328 and 3,010 hits until he retired in 1999 due to knee damage.

He holds the highest ranking among active Major League Baseball players, coming in at number 33 overall for career batting average among players with at least 1,000 plate appearances. Additionally, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005 as well as the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2004.

American actor, composer, singer, and musician Paul Hamilton Williams Jr. was born in Omaha, Nebraska. The songs “An Old Fashioned Love Song” and “Out in the Country” by Three Dog Night, as well as others performed by various groups in the 1970s, were written or co-written by him.

His 23 novels—all New York Times bestsellers—and two non-fiction books have been translated into more than 50 languages and have been distributed globally. Three of his books—The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, and Message in a Bottle—along with eight other books have been made into motion pictures.

19. Alexander Payne

American film producer, screenwriter, and director Constantine Alexander Payne is a native of Omaha, Nebraska. His most well-known works include the movies Nebraska (2013), Downsizing (2017), The Descendants (2011), About Schmidt (2002), Citizen Ruth (1996), and Election (1999).

His caustic portrayals of modern American culture and black humor are well known. Payne has placed three times on the Academy Award shortlist for Best Director and has won the Academy Award twice for Best Adapted Screenplay. 

20. Wynonie Harris

Wynonie Harris was an Omaha-born American blues shouter who is most known for her peppy songs with witty, often vulgar lyrics. Between 1946 and 1952, he had fifteen successes in the Top 10. Many musicologists consider Harris to be one of the pioneers of rock & roll.
