Anita Denise Baker was born on January 26, 1958. She is an American singer-songwriter and is one of the most popular singers of soulful ballads. Her vocal range is nearly three octaves and mezzo-soprano.

She started her career in the late 1970s with the funk band Chapter 8. Anita released her first solo album The Songstress in 1983. 

Her Platinum-selling second album rose her to stardom. It also included the Grammy-winning single Sweet Love. Anita has won eight Grammy Awards and has four platinum albums along with two Gold albums.

1. Before Her Music Career

Anita showed her passion for music when she joined her church’s choir in Detroit. However, she felt that wasn’t enough and decided to drop out of community college and began to pursue her music career.

She began performing in nightclubs with local bands and joined the funk group Chapter 8. Together with the group, she toured for several years and recorded an album that included the hit single I Just Want To Be Your Girl.

However, the group was dropped by its record company and she had to stop performing. It take too long before she was lured back into the business by Beverly Glen Records and she was able to record and release her first solo album.

2. The Beginning of Her Career

Her first album The Songstress reached number five on the R&B top 40 early the following year. However, even after the album was a success, the label delayed the follow-up album. After a lot of back and forth with the label, she released her second album Rapture through the Warner Music Group.

The song Sweet Love from her second album reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and was also on the UK Top 20.  In 1986 and 1987, she promoted the album through touring. By 1988, the album sold over 8 million copies worldwide, and 5 million copies in the United States alone.

The album resulted in Anita winning two Grammy Awards at the 1987 ceremony.

3. Successful Starter Year

In 1988, Anita released a follow-up album after her second album was successful. The album instantly topped the Billboard 200 and sold 5 million copies worldwide. Giving You the Best That I Got track reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the R&B and adult contemporary charts. 

Just Because the track reached the top 20 on the pop chart while the third single Lead Me Into Love became a top ten R&B hit. The album gained her three more Grammy Awards.

4. Other Albums

In 2004, Anita returned to live to perform and was able to sign with Blue Note Records. In September 2004, she released the album My Everything, which peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. It was also number one on the R&B charts and eventually certified gold.

In 2005, Anita released ChristmasFantasy which won a Grammy nomination for the song, Christmas Time Is Here. In May 2005, Anita was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music. 

Anita embarked on a two-year concert tour titled An Evening with Anita Baker. The tour began in 2007 and she would occasionally sing the American National anthem at sports events. The tour had a lot of opportunities for her as a musician.

5. Before her Retirement

 

In 2012, Anita released her version of Tyrese’s hit Lately. The song made headlines for Anita, this made her the first artist to make this kind of debut. However, her then-album project was delayed and eventually never materialized.

On February 2013, Anita returned to the national spotlight by performing Lately and Same Ole Love on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In the same month, she appeared at the Grammys where her single Lately was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance. 

On January 2017, Anita confirmed she had retired. However, this didn’t last long and she emerged from retirement in 2018.

6. Personal Life 

Anita married Walter Bridgforth Jr. on December 24, 1988. The couple later separated in 2005 and finalized their divorce two years later. They have two sons, Walter Baker Bridgforth and Edward Carlton Bridgforth.  Anita now lives in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.

Five years after her divorce Anita filed for a legal name change from Bridgforth to Baker.

Over the course of her career, she has won multiple awards that elevated her fame and made her grow as a celebrity. Some of her awards include Best R&B Vocal Performance in 1987, Best Rhythm & Blues Song in 1987, Favourite Soul/R&B album in 1988, and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

However, as much as she won many awards, she has also been nominated for many more awards including Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance in 2005, Best Traditional R&B Performance in 2013, Favourite Soul/R&B Female Artist in 1996, and Best Music Video in 1987.

In 2013, Anita was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame.

8. Back-to-Back Tours & Albums

From the beginning of her career, Anita has been able to sell out each of her albums. She has released six complete albums that all won at least one award. Her albums include The Songstress in 1983, Rapture in 1986, Giving You the Best That I Got in 1988, Compositions in 1990, Rhythm of Love in 1994, and My Everything in 2004.

Anita has a lot of successful tours in order to sell more copies and gain more fans. Some of the tours include The Rapture Tour From 1986-1987 after the release of her second album, Giving You the Best World Tour from 1988 to 1989, and Compositions World Tour from 1990 to 1991.
