Jay-Z is an American rapper, songwriter, record executive, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who was born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4, 1969. He is regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide.

Jay-Z grew up in the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, New York, and began his music career in the early 1990s, releasing his debut album “Reasonable Doubt” in 1996. Along with “The Blueprint,” “The Black Album,” and “4:44,” he went on to release several critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums.

In addition to his successful music career, Jay-Z is a fantastically successful entrepreneur with a diverse range of business interests. He co-founded several successful bands, including

1. Shawn Corey Carter is Jay-Z’s given name

Around the neighbourhood, he was known as “Jazzy,” but he later changed his stage name to “Jay-Z” in honour of his mentor, Jaz-O. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Jay-Z can be heard briefly on several of Jaz- early O’s recordings, including“H. P. Gets Busy,” “The Originators,” and “Hawaiian Sophie.”

Jay-name Z’s was originally spelled with a hyphen (Jay-Z), but he later dropped the hyphen and began spelling it as “Jay Z.”

2. Jay-Z was a drug dealer before he became a rapper

Before becoming a successful rapper, he was involved in the sale of crack cocaine in Brooklyn in the 1980s. In interviews, he has openly discussed his previous involvement in drug dealing and how it affected his life and music.

Jay-Z grew up in the Marcy Houses, a public housing project in Brooklyn, and as a teenager, he began selling drugs to make money. He has described how living in poverty and witnessing the effects of drug addiction on his community shaped his perspective and inspired him to pursue a career in music as a means of escaping that lifestyle.

While Jay-past Z’s drug dealing is public knowledge, it’s worth noting that he has since distanced himself from that lifestyle and has become an advocate for criminal justice reform and social justice causes. He has used his platform and wealth in recent years to support a variety of initiatives aimed at promoting equity and opportunity for marginalized communities.

Jay-Z had won a total of 24 Grammy Awards throughout his career as of September 2021, making him one of the most awarded artists in music history. 

4. Jay-Z is also a successful entrepreneur

He is also a highly successful entrepreneur with diverse business interests. Here are some of Jay-business Z’s ideas:

  • Rocawear Clothing: Jay-Z and Damon Dash co-founded Rocawear Clothing in 1999. The brand grew in popularity and was eventually sold for $204 million in 2007.
  • Jay-Z established Roc Nation in 2008, an entertainment company 
  • Tidal: In 2015, Jay-Z purchased the music streaming service Tidal, which he relaunched as a platform with high-quality, exclusive content from some of the music industry’s biggest names.
  • Ace of Spades Champagne: In 2014, Jay-Z purchased the luxury champagne brand Ace of Spades.

These are just a few of Jay-Z’s ideas that have helped him become one of the entertainment industry’s most successful and influential businessman.

5. Jay-Z is married to Beyoncé

Jay-Z and singer Beyoncé collaborated on the song“’03 Bonnie & Clyde” in 2002. He also sang on Beyoncé’s hit single “Crazy in Love” and “That’s How You Like It,” both from her debut album Dangerously in Love. He appeared on the hits “Déjà Vu” and “Upgrade U” from her second album, B’Day.

She imitates his appearance in the video for the latter song. They kept a low profile during their relationship and married on April 4, 2008. Their relationship became public on April 22, 2008, but Beyoncé did not reveal her $5 million Lorraine Schwartz-designed wedding ring until the Fashion Rocks concert on September 5, 2008.

They live in an $88 million home in Los Angeles’ Bel Air neighbourhood. They generally avoid discussing their relationship, and Beyoncé has stated her belief that this has helped them, while Jay-Z agreed in a People article that they do not “play with [their] relationship”.  Beyoncé and Jay-Z were named the most powerful couple in Time magazine’s 2006 list of the 100 most influential people.

Forbes ranked them as Hollywood’s highest-earning couple in January 2009, with a combined total of $162 million. They topped the list the following year, earning a total of $122 million between June 2008 and June 2009.

6. Jay-Z was the first rapper to be inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2017

With over 140 million records sold, Jay-Z is one of the world’s best-selling music artists. He has won 24 Grammy Awards, which he shares with Kanye West. Jay-Z also holds the record for the most Billboard 200 number-one albums by a solo artist. He has received the NAACP President’s Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Sports Emmy Award, as well as a Tony Award nomination.

Billboard and Rolling Stone named him one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Jay-Z was the first rapper to be inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, as well as the first solo living rapper to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013, Time named him one of the world’s 100 most influential people.

7. Jay-Z is a philanthropist 

Jay-Z is known for his philanthropy and has donated millions of dollars to various causes throughout his career. He has donated money to bail out protestors arrested during anti-police brutality activism. 

Jay-Z donated $1 million through the Shawn Carter Foundation in March 2020 for relief during the COVID-19 pandemic in New York; in April 2020, Jay-Z and Meek Mill donated over 100,000 face masks to US prisons to protect inmates from COVID-19.

8. Jay-Z announced his retirement from music in 2003

Jay-Z held a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 25, 2003, billed as a “retirement birthday celebration,”  which could later be the focus of his film Fade to Black. The entire amount was donated to charity.

9. Jay-Z enjoys sports and owns a minority stake in the NBA team

Jay-Z was a part-owner of the Brooklyn Nets NBA team for ten years (2003-2013), having paid a reported $1 million for his share, which had declined in value to $350,000 in April 2013, according to Forbes magazine’s valuation of the team. In the 2012-2013 season, he encouraged the team’s relocation from New Jersey to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, where it became the Brooklyn Nets.

10. Jay-Z is well-known for his love of art

Jay-Z is well-known for his love of art and owns works by several famous artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Pablo Picasso. In 2013, he collaborated with the Pace Gallery in New York to present an exhibition of works by Tim Bengel, a German artist.

The “Scars of Democracy” exhibition featured large-scale portraits of political figures made from sand and gold dust. Jay-Z is also known to make references to art and art history in his music, including lyrics and music videos. Aside from his personal collection, he has contributed to several art-related charities and organizations that promote arts education and provide opportunities for young artists.
