Is Mo’Nique Gay? Everything You Need To Know About Her Sexuality

Monique Angela Hicks who goes by the name Mo’Nique is an American-born and raised stand-up comedian. Born in 1967, the famous comedian and actress rose to prominence after appearing in movies including Precious and The Parker. She has also appeared on screen in sitcoms and television shows. She has received several personal accolades including an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actor.

Becoming famous has put Mo’Nique in the spotlight and many questions have been directed towards her including personal questions about her sexuality. However, the Precious star came out as bisexual in her Netflix comedy special called My Name is Mo’Nique.

She explains to her fans in an emotional story about why she kept the secret about her sexuality. According to her, she grew up in a toxic family with a religious grandmother who would not tolerate queer persons in the family.

Growing up, Mo’Nique had a queer ‘uncle’ who constantly engaged in fights with her grandmother MiMi because she didn’t accept that she had a lesbian daughter. “My grandmother has a daughter. But we call her daughter Uncle Tina. My Uncle Tina, if she walked in here right now, you would think you were looking at a whole man,” she explained to her fans.

Mo’Nique was a sensitive person and did not want to break her grandmother’s heart by telling her that she was queer. So she opted to keep the secret and vowed to herself to go to the grave with her little secret. She also did not want to tell her grandmother because she would feel like a failure. “And I did not want her to leave this Earth thinking she was a failure. Cause had I told her, my secret thoughts, she would’ve left thinking that she failed,” she added.

The actress therefore lived her childhood life in fear that if anyone found out about her sexuality she would be in trouble with her family. She condemns religion for being the reason behind her family breaking apart because Grandmother MiMi would not accept gender fluidity.

The famous stand-up comedian has always been a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and has expressed her pride in those who embraced their sexuality. Despite missing a chance to live as a queer woman in the past, she is glad that the world today allows people to be who they want to be.

Although Mo’Nique has been married for almost two decades to her husband Sidney Hicks, she still has a desire for women. She opened up to her husband, with whom they have teenage twin sons, and to her surprise, he accepted her situation.

Mo’Nique explains in the comedy how she told her husband that she wanted to be with other women sexually. “Bitch, me too,” her husband responded to her statement with a loving gaze. Therefore the two are in terms of each other’s sexuality and Mo’Nique can go on to have a woman sexually.

However, Mo’Nique explained to her fans that she is not entirely lesbian and considers herself to be in between, which is to say she is bisexual. She can now embrace her body and be who she wants to be.
