1. The Hornets Is One Of The Teams Representing Delaware State In Men’s Basketball

Delaware State University has contributed a lot to popularizing the Delaware State. Its basketball team is one of the hallmarks of the state and has continued to thrive over the years. Named ‘The Delaware State Hornets men’s basketball team’, is one of the teams that have the honors of maintaining the relevance of the State in athletes. It is based at Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware, United States. They currently compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

2. Delaware State Also Has A Women’s Basketball Team

4. Delaware Began Competing In Intercollegiate Basketball In 1905

According to the natives, Delaware began competing in intercollegiate basketball in 1905. However, the school’s record does not show exact records dating back to the years before the 1950s, as records from before this period are often incomplete and inconsistent. The reason could be that the game was not as developed as it is now. Another reason given is that scoring was much lower in this era, and teams played much fewer games during a typical season, it is likely that few or no players from this era would appear on these lists anyway.

Moving on we might be interested to learn that the University of Delaware basketball team has appeared in the NCAA tournament a record six times. Their combined record is 0–6. Prior to this, as a member of the CAA, Delaware won the 2014 CAA tournament to qualify for this NCAA tournament.

7. Delaware State Has A Basketball Team Playing In The NBA Development League

Delaware State has a basketball team playing in the NBA Development league. The team was formed in 2007 by Utah entrepreneur Brandt Andersen and is based in Orem, Utah, playing at the McKay Events Center and is affiliated to NBA’s Utah jazz. The team is currently known as the Delaware 87ers after being acquired by the Philadelphia 76ers on April 27, 2013. It plays its games at the University of Delaware campus.   

8. The 87ers Finished Their First Season With A 12–38 Record

During the 2013–14 season the 87ers finished their first season with a 12–38 record. Two players received a GATORADE Call-Up to play for Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtic, which is a big honor to the Delaware State basketball fraternity.

 9. Delaware State Basketball Team Members Are Also Involved In Other Community Projects

 The 87ers who are part of the Delaware State basketball community have been honored in the past and received the Merit Award for Emerging Business of the Year, and also received the Voter’s Choice Award for Community Involvement at the Delaware Small Business Chamber’s Blue Ribbon Awards Ceremony.

10. 87ers Have Their Mascot In Delaware State

Apart being known for playing basketball, the 87ers are also known for introducing their mascot, Caesar, on August 22, 2014. In the United States, Caesar was a fox that is known as a state animal of Delaware, and is named in honor of Caesar Rodney who served on the Continental Congress as a representative from Delaware during the American Revolution.

11. Delaware State Has Several Players Plying Their Trade In the NBA

During the 2015-16 season the 87ers showed remarkable improvement performance and even managed to four different players scoring at least 45 points in a game. These included; Sean Kilpatrick scored 45 points, Jordan McRae set the all-time D-League single-game scoring record with 61 points, Christian Wood scored 45 points, and Russ Smith broke McRae’s record and scored 65 points. Their efforts were paid off when they were selected as All-Stars, and both along with Wood received NBA call-ups.

12. Delaware Blue Coats Is One Of The Basketball Teams In Delaware State

Delaware State also has another basketball team known as the Delaware Blue Coats. This team has an interesting history as it was named after the 1st Delaware Regiment, also known as the “Delaware Blues,” and their key role in the American Revolution. Their team logo is special as it is thought to have played a defining moment Caesar Rodney made his famous 70-mile ride from Dover to Philadelphia on July 1–2, 1776, to cast Delaware’s tie-breaking vote in favor of what would become the Declaration of Independence.

Delaware State basketball teams currently compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. This is a collegiate athletic conference whose full members are historically black colleges and universities in the Southeastern and the Mid-Atlantic United States.

15. The Hornets Flying The Delaware State basketball Flag At The MEAC Finished The 2021–22 Season In Last Place
