1. Texas was Derived from Caddo Indian Meaning Friends

The word Texas is a Caddo Indian word “teycha” which means allies or friends. The city was named by some of the native people who lived here before the Spanish conquest. The early Spanish explorer transcribed the land as “tejas” which over time led to what is known today as Texas. Surprisingly, the Texas motto to date remains Friendship. However, during the Spanish colonial rule, the city was known as Nuevas Filipinas meaning New Philippines back in the 18th century.

2. It Hosts Americans largest Rose Garden

Texas Rose Festival is a three–day celebration that has lasted since 1933. The main aim of these days is to celebrate all the floral things and appreciate the magnificent look and smell of these flowers. The celebrations are held every year in October and thousands of tourists flood the city in celebrations of the festival. The floral farm hosts over five hundred species and over thirty-eight rose bushes which stand on a fourteen-acre farm.

6. Chinese and Vietnamese are among the most spoken languages in Texas

In Texas, the most spoken languages are English and Spanish. However, the state has gradually developed and grown in population from different communities and cultures. As a result, the Chinese and Vietnamese have also increased in number in the state. The grown population has led to approximately two thousand Chinese speakers and roughly two hundred and fifty Vietnamese speakers lining the state. This places the two languages in positions three and four in the state’s most spoken languages.

The opposition also gained support from the abolitionist within the United States. In 1844, Texas was annexed following the elections of that year which James K. Polk won.
