Dr. Dre’s childhood in Compton assumed a critical part in moulding his sound and style, as he drew motivation from the roads and encounters of his old neighbourhood. For her first Emmy nomination, Nash admitted, “You know, it’s funny. I was raised in Compton, California with my mom, who was a single mom. And when I said I wanted to be an actress, my mother said, ‘Well, baby, we don’t know anybody in entertainment. Mother can’t help you with that. But you know what you can do? Why don’t you become a nurse?’ Cut to now that I’m on ‘Getting On,’ she’s gonna say, ‘I always told you, you would make a wonderful nurse!’”

Niecy Nash is an American actress, comedian, and television host. She has starred in several television shows such as Reno 911! The Soul Man and Getting On. Nash hosted the TBS reality shows Funniest Wins, The Great Big Stand-Up Show and Scream Queens. Performing in stand-up comedy clubs is where she got her start. Nash is remembered for iconic TV shows including Reno 911!  and Claws for which she received critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination. In addition to her acting career, Nash has also hosted several television shows, including Clean House, Style Network’s home makeover show, The Insider, and Reno 911!: Miami.  She has also written a book titled It’s Hard to Fight Naked, which was released in 2013.

Suge Knight

On the set of “Straight Outta Compton,” Knight got into a heated argument, got in his truck and drove into a crowd killing Terry Carter and injuring Cle “Bone” Sloan. He was sentenced to 28 years for voluntary manslaughter.   The manslaughter conviction would normally carry an 11-year sentence, but it was doubled under California’s Three Strikes Law because of his previous convictions. He received an additional 5 years because the crime was a serious and violent felony and an additional year for use of a deadly weapon.

American politician Aja LaShay Bullock Brown served as Compton, California’s youngest mayor. At 31 years (when elected) Brown became the youngest mayor in the city’s history. Compton’s 34th mayor after winning the 2013 special election with 55% of the vote. Brown also become the second woman to lead the city. Brown’s priorities as mayor were reviving Compton’s economy and lowering the city’s crime rate. The Compton Youth Empowerment Program, which offered young people opportunities for mentorship and job training was her flagship project. Brown was born and raised in the city, and she has frequently expressed her desire to make Compton residents’ lives better. Brown was named to the business, government, and other categories of Fortune magazine’s 2014 40 Under 40 list.

Kendrick Lamar

Kimberly Anyadike is a young American pilot who in 2009 became the youngest African-American woman to fly across the United States. She accomplished this feat at the age of 15, flying a single-engine Cessna from her hometown of Compton, California to Newport, Virginia and her News. She pursued flying because The Tuskegee Airmen blazed the path before her. enrolled in an aviation program at the age of 12 and began taking flying lessons. During her solo flight over the United States, Kimberly encountered many challenges, including inclement weather and mechanical problems with the plane. But she persevered, and after 13 days she made it safely. Since her historic flight, Kimberly has inspired and advocated for more diversity and inclusion in the aviation industry.

Eazy-E

Born Eric Wright in Compton, California in 1964, Eazy-E grew up in a rough neighbourhood. He turned to drug dealing to make ends meet. Founded one of the most successful independent record labels -Ruthless Records. With N.W.A., Eazy-E helped popularize gangsta rap. People called him The Godfather of Gangsta Rap. He also launched the careers of several other successful rappers, including Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. Eazy-E died in 1995 at the age of 31 from complications related to AIDS. His legacy as a cultural icon and music industry trailblazer continues to reverberate today.

Anthony Anderson

Anthony Anderson is a comedian, game show host and actor from the United States. He is best known for his leading roles in comedy series like Black-ish as Andre “Dre” Johnson. In addition, he portrayed Antwon Mitchell from The Shield, Glen Whitman from Transformers, Ray Ray from The Proud Family, and Louis Booker from Kangaroo Jack. Violet Renice Palmer

Violet Renice Palmer is a retired American basketball referee in the NBA and WNBA. She was the first female official to reach the highest competitive tier in the US. She was also recognized for playing on two NCAA Division II women’s basketball championship teams. A native of Compton, California, Palmer e attended college at Cal Poly Pomona, where she played point guard on the 1985 and 1986 NCAA Division II women’s championship teams. Palmer had officiated hundreds of NBA and WNBA games. The NBA signed Palmer and Dee Kantner in 1997, making them the first female top-level officials in any major U.S. professional sport. Palmer officiated the NBA season opener between the Dallas Mavericks and the Vancouver Grizzlies on October 31, 1997. Palmer started Violet Palmer’s Official Camp in 2001 to teach kids how to officiate games. The camp is held every year in July.
