10 Most Famous American Inventors


 

The United States of America is currently the superpower country in the world. This ranges from the security of the country to technological development.

The evolution of developments is mostly as a result of inventions done by geniuses and intelligent inventors, scientists, engineers, and publishers which began Before the Counting era (BC) with America having a good number of inventors. 

One of such great and famous inventors was Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard, who brought to life the era of space flight and innovations by inventing the first successful liquid-fueled rocket and launched it on the 16th of March, 1926.

Another great invention from America was by Robert Fulton, the first person in the world to succeed in the process of steamboat construction from testing to commercial usage. He also developed steam warships, submarines, and inland waterways.

The list is endless, but it’s of great essence to mention that Samuel Finley Breese Morse a well-known philanthropist, painter, and inventor who contributed to the electric telegraph of a single-wire system based on the European telegraph.

He also developed Morse’s code with the help of his friend, Alfred Vail, Grace Brewster Murray Hopper who developed one of the first high-level programming languages, COBOL.

Edwin Howard Armstrong’s invention of frequency modulation development and the development of the Superheterodyne receiver earned him  the IEEE Medal of Honor and the IEEE Edison Medal respectively.

1. Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander G. Bell was a Scottish-born American who was a scientist, engineer, and inventor. He was born in Edinburgh, the United Kingdom on the 3rd of March, 1847.

He brought to life a practical telephone. Bell’s mother was hearing impaired which brought the idea of electronic speech. He was the co-founder of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company.

He died on the 2nd of August, 1922 in Binn Bhreagh.

2. George Washington Carvers

George was born in 1864 in diamond Missouri and died in the Alabama United States on the 5th of January, 1943. He was a great agricultural scientist and inventor who mostly dealt with agricultural products.

He came up with alternate crops to cotton and also helped develop soil depletion prevention methods. George was the most prominent black scientist of the 20th century.

He was behind the inventions of more than 300 peanut products from various sources, 118 products from sweet potatoes, and also developed a type of gasoline. In 1923, he was awarded the Spingarn Medal.

Some of George’s inspiring facts are; he valued education, he would not quit under any circumstances and his determinations paid. His body was laid at Tuskegee University.

3. Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin was born on the 17th of January, 1706 in Massachusetts, the United States of America, and died on the 17th of April 1790 in Pennsylvania.  

He is also referred to as the founding father of the United States. He was well known for being a writer, scientist, printer, publisher, statesman, diplomat, political philosopher, and inventor.

Amongst his inventions, he came up with swimming fins, Pennsylvania stove, lightning rod, flexible catheter, bifocals, and others.

He also helped improve the 24 hours three-wheel clock by making it simpler than the other designs.

In appreciation, Benjamin was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Society (FRS), Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), and the Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) awards.

4. Robert Fulton

Robert Fulton was born on the 14th of November, 1765 in Lancaster Pennsylvania, united states. He was an artist, engineer, and inventor.

He was the first person to succeed in the process of steamboat construction from testing to commercial usage.

He also developed steam warships, submarines, and inland waterways. He died on the 24th of February, 1815 in New York, United States.

5. Eli Whitney

Whitney was born on the 8th of December, 1725 in Massachusetts the United States. He was an engineer by profession from Yale College.

In 1793, he successfully invented the cotton gin. Later on, he came up with interchangeable parts advocacy. He died on the 8th of January, 1825 in the Connecticut United States.

6. Henry Ford

Ford was a business magnate, an industrialist, and the founder of the Ford Company. He was born on the 30th of July, 1863, and died on the 7th of April 1947.

He went through formal education at Detroit business institute in Downriver.

With the help of his son, he constructed a Model ‘A’ motor car. He had a vision of making a cost-less car such that every man could afford it.

Other than the motor car creations, he developed the assembly line model of production.

7. Robert Hutchings Goddard

Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard was born on the 5th of October, 1882 in Massachusetts, the United States.

He was an engineer, professor, physicist, and inventor. He brought to life the era of space flight and innovations by inventing the first successful liquid-fueled rocket and launched it on the 16th of March, 1926.

Robert also developed the two-axis control; steerable thrust and the gyroscope, to allow rockets to control their flights effectively. He died on the 10th of august, 1945 in Maryland, United States.

8. Samuel Finley Breese Morse

Samuel Finley Breese Morse was a well-known philanthropist, painter, and inventor. He was born on the 27th of April, 1791 in the Boston United States.

He contributed to the electric telegraph of a single-wire system based on the European telegraph.

He also developed Morse’s code with help of his friend, Alfred Vail. The code was a representation of alphabetical letters, numerals, and punctuation marks by arranging them into dots, dashes, and spaces.

This code was used by amateur radio users and civil war re-enactors. He died on the 2nd of April, 1872 in New York.

9. Grace Brewster Murray Hopper

Grace Brewster Murray Hopper was born on the 9th of December 1960 in New York, the United States.

She was a computer scientist and US navy of rear admiral rank. She was among the pioneers of computer programing. Grace invented the first compiler, a program that translates programming code to machine language.

She helped develop COBOL, one of the first high-level programming languages. She also taught at Yale University, Vassar College, and the Warlaw-Hartridge school. Grace Hopper died on the 1st of January, 1992 in Virginia, United States.

10. Edwin Howard Armstrong

Edwin Howard Armstrong was born on the 18th of December, 1890 in Chelsea New York. He was passionate about becoming an inventor at 14 years of age. Later on, he became an electrical engineer and an inventor.

Armstrong is known and remembered in an appreciative way for his invention of frequency modulation development and the development of the Superheterodyne receiver. He went to Colombia University for his further studies.

Following his great inventions, he was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor and IEEE Edison medal. He died in 1954 in Manhattan New York.

The above outline inventors are amongst many who joined hands in the making of the United States of America and bringing it to this far. With the technological inventions of computers, motor cars, and others.

The development of a state fully depends on the level of creativity and inventions of its subjects.

Some of the inventors were awarded by governmental bodies with others being rewarded through blessings of the work of their hands by making a lot of money from the inventions like Henry Ford.
