Top 3 hotels in Belleville

Incredibly diverse, artsy and musical, Belleville is one of the most quintessential Parisian neighborhoods. Located in northeastern Paris, Belleville stretches 2.5km along the historic Rue de Belleville, between the 19th and 20th arrondissements. There’s a lot to see in this area, and it makes a great home base for exploring Paris!

Formerly a working-class village on the outskirts of Paris, Belleville was added to Paris proper in 1860.  Thanks to the bustling arts scene, Belleville has been transformed over the years into one of the coolest areas in the city. Home to the lush and expansive Parc de Belleville, the Père Lachaise cemetery (final resting place of the likes of Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison), and plenty of great eateries and cool bars, the area is definitely worth a visit.

Since it’s not in central Paris per say, this cool Parisian neighborhood is usually overlooked by first-time visitors. Because it’s relatively off the beaten track, you’ll get more for your money in Belleville than elsewhere in the city. But whether you’re looking for some peace and quiet amidst the city bustle or just want to spend a little less, staying in Belleville can be a great option.

In this article I’ll share my recommendations for the top 3 hotels in Belleville as well as what to see and do there. I hope you enjoy discovering this area as much as I did!

1. Mama Shelter

The trendy Mama Shelter is not only one of the top 3 hotels in Belleville, but it doubles as a rooftop bar and lounge. With excellent views overlooking Paris, the bar makes for an excellent place to watch the sunset. They also have an in-house pizzeria and a bar often playing live music.  The bar, rooftop and pizzeria are also open to the public. And the easygoing ambiance at Mama Shelter have made it a local favorite.

This two star hotel is located right in the middle of Belleville. It’s within walking distance to the areas’ main attractions like Père Lachaise and the famous street art haven, Rue Dénoyez.  The funky, eclectic interior designed by Phillip Starck is comfortable and modern. Mama Shelter is by no means a luxury hotel, but the location is great, the rooms comfortably furnished and the price is right.

Basic rooms start at €110 per night. If you’re hoping for the ultimate Parisian vibe, rooms with balconies and views over Paris are usually available if you’re willing to upgrade.  All in all, Mama Shelter is an excellent place to stay if you’re looking for looking for a great, affordable hotel in Belleville.

2. Hotel Scarlett

Set in a typical Parisian building in the heart of Belleville, off a narrow cobblestone street lies Hotel Scarlett. Just 3 minutes from metro station Pyrenées and 2 minutes from the Parc de Belleville, this little 3 star hotel is expertly tucked away in a cozy niche.

The inviting decor is warm and definitely vintage, with lots of antique accents. Old world maps adorn the walls of the rooms and the furniture is artsy and unique. Overall, the rooms are comfortable, and welcoming. Basic rooms go for about €110 per night if you manage to book a couple weeks in advance. Suites are also available, and are definitely an upgrade in terms of comfort and space. Their suites can host up to 4 people, for around €240 per night.

Though they don’t have a restaurant, there’s also a pretty cool bar/lounge downstairs where you can enjoy a drink.

Plus, not very many “regular” hotels in Paris have air conditioning, but this one does! So Hotel Scarlett can really be a life saver if you’re planning a trip to Paris during the hot Summer months.

3. Aparthotel Adagio Buttes Chaumont

Located in decidedly the coolest part of the 19th arrondissement, and right on the edge of Belleville is Aparthotel Adagio. The amazing Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is just a two minute walk from the hotel, and the hip canal de l’Ourcq is also close by. Not to mention, Aparthotel is literally just meters from the nearest Metro, Botzaris. In less than 20 minutes via metro, you can be in the heart of Paris!

Besides the great location, Aparthotel is one of the top 3 hotels in Belleville because it’s not your typical Parisian hotel.  This 3 star “hotel” is actually made up of 97 individual apartments! Every apartment is equipped with a full kitchen and separate living space,  as well as a bedroom or two. Which is super rare in the city!

If you’re traveling by car, Aparthotel even has a private parking garage available onsite. And as an added bonus, pets are also allowed here. Just make sure to specify this when you make the reservation.

This place is ideal if you crave a more authentic and truly “Parisian” experience. Since you’ll have access to a full kitchen, this is the perfect opportunity to check out some incredible Paris food markets and even try your hand at delicious French cuisine!

It’s also worth mentioning that Aparthotel is also one of the most affordable options out there. Especially if you’re traveling as a larger group. The price for a one bedroom apartment start at around €160 per night. These apartments host up to 4 people, so this is a great option for families. And a two bedroom apartment for 6 people is around €315 per night.

Home to some of the city’s largest parks, the legendary Père Lachaise and not to mention a great arts and music scene, Belleville should definitely be on your list.
