Lisbon is a very entertaining city, with many cultural and fun events! From free concerts, burlesque shows and original museums, you will be well-served in Lisbon! Read on to find out things to do in Lisbon in November!
Attend a burlesque show
First on my list of things to do in Lisbon in November is the Underground Burlesque Fest. This event happens on November, 9th and November, 10th, but these dates still need confirmation. You will definitely spend a different kind of night, attending cocktail parties, burlesque shows and many other surprises. The tickets for each day are of 10 euros. There will be live concerts, a Miss PinUp contest, burlesque shows until 11 am each night and DJs will be performing until 4 am. If you want an original and fun night experience in Lisbon, this event is perfect! The burlesque artists are both nationally and internationally known. The event will take place at O Ferroviário, located on Rua de Santa Apolónia, 59. It’s the third edition of the event, but this year it looks really promising! I’ve already got my ticket!
Eat “castanhas assadas”
If you come to Lisbon in November, you absolutely have to eat “castanhas assadas“, which means roasted chestnuts in English. During the month of October, the harvest has already begun and they already are selling the early ones. But the best-roasted chestnuts you will ever eat truly are the November ones. During the month of November, you will find plenty of roasted chestnuts street sellers in Lisbon. But if you want to prepare them on your own, it’s very easy! You just need an oven, a knife and coarse salt. The first step is to wash the chestnuts, then make a slight cut on each chestnut. Put salt on a baking dish, and then place the chestnuts on top of the salt. Make sure the chestnuts are not overlapping. Your chestnuts will be ready to go to the oven! Preheat your oven to 180º and put the chestnuts inside. They will be roasting for about 40 minutes. You just have to check on them and flip them at some point, so that they bake on each side!
On São Martinho day, on November, 11th, families gather and celebrate the beginning of Autumn and cold weather. They eat “castanhas assadas” and drink new wine of the season, or some “jeropiga”, a traditional alcoholic beverage made from fresh grape juice. Delicious!
Have fun at a music festival
Next on my things to do in Lisbon in November is the Vodafone Mexefest at Avenida da Liberdade. It happens during two days, on the 23th and 24th of November. We will be counting with the presence of many artists, such as Johnny Marr, Jungle, Rejjie Show, U.S. Girls, Birds are Indie, Conan Osiris and many more! This festival is very popular, so you will be sure to meet locals and party with them! Portuguese people are very friendly and funny! The ticket price of both days are of 40 euros.
Have a coffee at A Brasileira
If you come to Lisbon, you absolutely have to have a coffee at A Brasileira. It is located in the Chiado area and it is definitely one of things to in Lisbon in November. A Brasileira is more than a century old. It is one of the oldest and most famous cafés in Lisbon, which makes it the most iconic of Lisbon. Many important Portuguese figures have entered its doors and have seated at its tables to enjoy their coffees. A Brasileira used to be the meeting point for intelectuals, writers, philosophers. Their most famous client was Fernando Pessoa, a Portuguese poet and writer. They even got a statue of him at his old usual table.
It is usual very crowded so the best time of the day to guarantee you get an available table is early in the morning or right before dinner! As Fernando Pessoa used to say “Hope for the best and prepare for the worst“.
Visit the National Tile Museum
The National Tile Museum is super awesome. It is definitely one of the things to do in Lisbon in November! Azulejos are very important in Portuguese culture. As you walk through Lisbon, you will see that the ceramic tileworks have a very strong presence in its architecture. Schools, museums, churches, houses, all have their walls and even ceilings covered by azulejos. It gives a unique look to Lisbon buildings, creating the city’s own unique style. Azulejos are part of Portuguese history. That is why if you’re curious, you want to learn more about Portuguese culture and you want to know how was this custom born, you really should go to the National Tile Museum!
