Here are some good ideas of what to do around the beach in Barcelona. Because we are much more than sun and water. Sunbathing, building sand castles, having a cold beer in a chiringuito, hanging out next to the sea is an absolute privilege. But, once you are done you need our ideas for things to do in Barcelona around the beach.
If you are looking for things to do around the Beach, perhaps you haven’t thought about shopping, because you can do that anywhere. The point is that, for a weird reason I don’t really get, three of the city’s biggest malls are close to the coast (well, the reason may be simply that: be close to our lovely beaches). Take note: next to Nova Icària Beach there’s the Centre Vila Mall, and heading up north from the Mar Bella Beach it’s easy to get to Diagonal Mar Mall (one of my favourite ones, close to the Fòrum). And there’s even more… walking from the Barceloneta to the Port Vell you can get to Maremagnum. There’s no escape. Put something over your swimsuit and prepare your credit card!
If your are close to the Mar Bella pier you can easily make a reality one of the best ideas for things to do around the Beach: visit the neighbourhood of Poblenou. Once a fishermen’s and working class quarter, today its a place trapped in time, between the beach and the office and co-working buildings of the Glòries zone. From the Mar Bella’s pier you can get the Passatge de la Llacuna or Carrer Litoral to cross the motorway and then enter Poblenou. Look for the Plaça Prim and it’s restaurant, Els Pescadors for amazing seaman cuisine or just walk through Rambla del Poblenou (in the photo above) to look for an orxata or an ice cream as a merienda.
Barceloneta is a neighbourhood in Barcelona so close to the sea that we have a beach named after it. Obviously, when you ask for things to do around the Beach, the answer is go and grab a cold beer around this neighbourhood. If its close to lunchtime (you know we have lunch late), you can go and sample the local vermut (sweet wine and tapas) at places like Jai-Ca, at Carrer Ginebra 12.
One of the most amazing things to admire is that this place is a rationally planned city many years before Ildefons Cerdà designed our beloved Eixample grid as a modernist urban expansion. Actually, la Barceloneta was built in a former island in the sea to relocate the neighbours of Vilanova del Mar and Sant Pere who lost their homes after the Spanish Secession War (in 1714).
The beach can be tiring or relaxing. In any of the cases when you think about things to do around the Beach in Barcelona, it makes a lot of sense to take a break from too much sunlight under the shade of of a tree. Fortunately, the area is crowded with parks. From la Ciutadella Park, next to la Barceloneta Beach to the four gardens in a row you can find in Poblenou, in front of the Ronda Litoral Motorway, just next to the beach of La Mar Bella. Your skin will be glad to get a little rest from the sun.
There are some touristic places that only offer you staying at the seaside, so I’m been glad to show you that Barcelona offers you many ideas for things to do around the Beach.
