Flowers are slowly blooming, the city regains its colors, the temperatures are rising but it doesn’t get too hot. Read on and find out some of the best things to do during Spring in Lisbon!
Have a picnic
Lisbon has gardens for all tastes and interests! So, you won’t be missing options for cool spring walks in the city. For instance, I’m sure you will enjoy Jardim da Graça which is the largest green area of the city. It has three viewpoints, an orchard, a children’s playgrounds and a picnic area for the families.
During Spring, having picnics is definitely one of my favorite things to do, because the weather is not too cold and not too hot either. It’s pleasant and you can freely stay under the sun without fearing to get burnt. However, it’s still wiser to bring a little sunscreen to avoid any risks.
Having a picnic is the most soothing activity in Lisbon. You only need to bring a blanket, a healthy dish and dessert to share with your group, and a deck of cards if you plan on staying for a while. I guarantee you will spend a lovely time! Whenever I go picnic in Lisbon, I always end up having a little nap! It is so relaxing!
Travel to Sintra
Next on my list of things to do during Spring in Lisbon is to travel to Sintra! While in Lisbon, you absolutely need to seize the opportunity and visit Sintra!
Sintra is only an hour away from Lisbon by train, and the train ticket only costs 2.25 euros. Plus, there are trains leaving Lisbon and Sintra every thirty minutes.
Why is Sintra so special? Sintra looks straight out of a fairytale! Anyone who visits Sintra falls eternally in love with it. Sintra is such a special place, where magic and mystery are mixed together, when humans can reconnect with nature.
Sintra was the place where the Celtics used to worship the moon, where the Moors erected their great wall, and was the place the royalty picked for the construction of their palaces. The history of this city is incredibly interesting!
You can visit the famous and colourful Pena Palace, which is one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal, the Moors Castle, the Quinta da Regaleira, and many more amazing monuments! But also the forest with its waterfalls and the beach that are simply the most enchanting places ever. Before you leave, don’t forget to have a taste at the traditional and delicious Queijadas from Sintra, which is the traditional pastry of the city.
Visit the Cristo-Rei
The Cristo-Rei is a religious monument with the best view of Lisbon, since it offers a panoramic view over the capital and the Ponte 25 de Abril. The sanctuary is located in the freguesia of Pragal in the Municipality of Almada, at an altitude of 112 meters above the Tejo river level.
Finished in 1959 and inspired by the Cristo Redentor statue of Rio de Janeiro,it is one of the highest constructions of Portugal. Take the opportunity to visit the Cristo-Rei during Spring, because it gets really crowded during the summer!
Ride a bike through the city
Now that Lisbon has a network renting system for bicycles, called “Gira”, you will be able to ride a bike through the city whilst exercizing! To use the bikes around the city, you only need to download the Gira app and follow the instructions. The price for a daily use is only two euros!
It certainly is one of the best things to do during Spring in Lisbon, because the weather is pleasant and you will get a different perspective on the city, without the tourist crowds! Enjoy!
Relax in some esplanade
There are so many great esplanades in Lisbon, but it doesn’t really matter. What really matters is the company and for you to be in a good mood. The rest will happen naturally. Relaxing in some esplanade while in Lisbon is definitely one of the best things to do during Spring! Enjoy the weather while drinking a nice drink. If you want a suggestion, you can go to the Rio Maravilha, which is found in the Lx Factory that is an arts centre. This place is one of the coolest in Lisbon! You can have a drink at the end of the day while enjoying good music and a friendly and cosy atmosphere!
Visit the Castelo São Jorge
Located in the highest hill of Lisbon, the Castelo São Jorge offers an incredible view over the city and allows us to time travel and discover the history of Lisbon.
This castle is found in the ancient medieval citadel. The Moors built it for their defense and used to live there, until the first King of Portugal Afonso Henriques took the castle and expelled the Muslims, opening the doors to the Christians. He then settled there with the court.
Visit the Castelo São Jorge and try to imagine the Lisbon of old times. Explore it, learn more about the different cultures that lived there, observe the horizon in one of the many viewpoints of the castle. These are only a few of the many activities you will be able to do during your visit. It is one of the greatest landmarks of the city and certainly should not be missed! Both adults and children will love it!
Go to the Feira do Livro
While in Lisbon, there is one event you cannot miss, which is the Feira do Livro: the “Book Fair”, in English. This year (2019), it will happen between May, 30th and June, 16th. Every year it takes place in the Parque Eduardo VII.
If you love literature or finding out new writers, you will love the Feiro do Livro! It will also allow you to learn more about Portuguese literature, which is not always taught in schools. Walk around the many tents and find real treasures! The books at this fair are a lot cheaper than in libraries, this is why you definitely seize the opportunity! Plus, in my opinion, a book is always an excellent gift or a great souvenir!
Enjoy the Out Jazz event
Starting in May, the gardens of Lisbon are filled with people for late-afternoon parties with lots of music, sun and drinks. It is called the Out Jazz and it happens every year during Spring in many gardens of the city! This event starts in May and ends in September. It takes place every sunday in a different garden each month. The performances start at 5 pm! You will be able to hear Jazz music, electro, hip hop, soul and funk in a unique atmosphere in connection with nature and surrounded by Lisbon greatest landmarks. It’s a great opportunity to meet the locals while listening to good music and enjoying the sunset!
Go to the beach
The Portuguese sea salt is of the highest quality! Portuguese beaches are very rich in iodine, which is the best you can ask for your health! Since it contains iodine, you will actually get plenty of health benefits, such as proper body development and prevention of certain diseases. Also, for instance, your hair, nails and teeth will get strengthened, your immune system will be boosted, your energy will be optimized, and many more well-being advantages!
No matter the time of the year, going to a Portuguese beach is always an awesome idea! Especially during Spring, since it won’t be as cold as during the winter and you will avoid summer crowds! Spring is also the best season if you feel like surfing the Portuguese waves!
