There are more than 10,000 accessible beaches in Australia, this by far is the highest number in the world. Some of the beaches are wild and is home to marine life and other wildlife.  

From beaches in Brisbane to remote beaches in Perth, Australia’s beaches are so expansive, you will not fight for towel space.   

Some of the world’s best surfers and swimmers come from down under, thanks to the exceptional beaches. What is more, you do not have to go a distance to get to the beach.

The coastal cities such as Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne have beaches right by the city.

These beaches are clean, have facilities like bathrooms, restaurants and other attractions.

1. Bondi Beach, New South Wales

We start on the east side of Australia, Sydney. Bondi is one of the most beautiful beaches in New South Wales. It is the closest beach to the city with perfect waves.

Its proximity to the city makes the beach a magnet for surfers and swimmers. The water is usually warm enough.

This beach is wheelchair friendly too. There are free wheelchairs available for children and adults at the Bondi pavilion.    

You can also access the changing rooms and lockers at the Bondi pavilion for a fee. The beach has lifeguards on patrol.  

There are also bars and cafés to eat and relax as you watch the waves and surfers.

2. Whitehaven Beach, Queensland

The Whitehaven beach in Queensland is considered the pearl of remote beaches. This is one of the cleanest beaches in continental Australia.

It is famous for its white sand and is popular for boating, yachting and ferry tours. The tours start from the Whitsunday Islands to the mainland Airlie beach.

This beach is four miles long and the sand is almost pure silica; a beautiful contrast to the turquoise water. Easy to the eyes and relaxing to your feet.

Whitehaven beach is perfect for snorkelling at the southern end. When the tide is low the sea and sand create a beautiful mosaic of white and blue swirls.

3. Turquoise Bay, Western Australia

As one of the most enchanting beaches in Western Australia, Turquoise Bay lives true to its name.

Its luminous blue-green water softly kisses the powdery shores. The beach is about 60 kilometres south of Exmouth in Cape Range National Park.

This beach is one of the few that one can snorkel on the mainland. Its colourful corals are part of the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef.

There are more than 250 species of corals and 500 different species of fish like anemone fish, colourful parrotfish, moon wrasse, starfish and reef sharks.

Remember to bring sunblock, cold drinks and shade. The only public facilities available are restrooms.  

4. Four Mile Beach, Queensland

This beach forms a near-perfect arch on the eastern peninsula lined with white sand and palm trees. One can access the beach at the end of Macrossan Street.

The swimming area is patrolled and right in front of the surf life-saving club. As much as the water is always inviting, there are poisonous box jellyfish at certain times of the year.

There is a fine mesh that protects swimmers from getting in contact with the jellyfish. Bottles of vinegar can be found along the beach in case someone got stung. 

5. Wineglass Bay, Tasmania

Found in Tasmania, the wineglass bay is strikingly beautiful on any day. This beach is part of the Freycinet National Park.

The beauty of this beach cannot be described perfectly with words but through experiencing it. Take a short walk from the lookout to the southern end of the beach.

Check out the Hazards and pink-tinged granite peaks punctuating one end of the bay. The Freycinet Experience Walk is a four-day hike along the peninsula.

There are several activities to take part in like snorkelling, kayaking, wildlife spotting and hiking.

6. Cable Beach, Broome

Think Australia and camels can be in the same photo? Well, Cable Beach is the place to go and ride the camels. Get up at sunrise and get to click silhouette photos of the camels.

This is one of the most popular activities on Cable beach. The beach stretches for 22 kilometres.

It got its name from the communication cables laid between Australia and Java back in 1889. One can drive a sport’s utility vehicle along the beach.  

The beach has a beautiful backdrop of the red hills. Its gentle waves are perfect for swimming.

Gantheaume Point is a landmark with a 130-million-year footprint of a dinosaur. It can be seen at low tide.

7. Noosa Main Beach, Queensland

Another gem in Queensland is Noosa main beach. This beach is postcard perfect. It is famous for its golden sand, azure blue water and lazy palm trees.

The beach has coast guards on patrol every day of the year. There are great boutique shops and restaurants to eat and relax at.

This beach can be accessed all year round and the water temperature is moderate. It is also one of the cleanest beaches northeast of Australia.

Noosa beach is close to the national park where one can spot koalas in the trees.

8. Manly Beach, New South Wales

This is Sydney’s second most famous beach. It has outstanding soft sand stretching for a mile. The southern end of the beach is known as south Steyne.

Manly beach is famous for hosting the first world surfing contest in 1964. To get to this beach, one can catch the ferry from Circular Quay.

There are bars and restaurants as well as shops along the beach. You can also hike on one of the several walking trails along the beach.

9. 75 Mile Beach, Queensland

Just as the name states, the beach is 75 miles long. This beach has so much gone and is one of the most beautiful and colourful in Queensland.

It is however not the best beach for swimming because of tiger sharks. There are safe swimming pools and freshwater lakes not far from the shore.

This beach is close to the Great Barrier reef.

10. Bells Beach, Victoria

Bells Beach is a surfer’s haven that loved swelling waves. The waves make it a dangerous place to swim. Torquay beach is nearby for those that love swimming.

It has been ranked as the best surfing spot and is home to the annual Rip Curl Easter Pro event. The beach is surrounded by high cliffs, the perfect backdrop for surfing.
