This national university was among the first to receive funding from the government. It specialized in offering engineering programs in the 50s.

The university moved to Shanghai in 1946 after the second Sino-Japanese war that happened between 1937 and 1945.

Today Tongji University offers 10 programs that are research-based and has highly skilled lecturers; more than 800 professors and at least 1,000 associate professors.

4. Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is a major research university in Shanghai.

It was founded in 1896 as Nanyang Public School by an imperial edict issued by the Guangxu Emperor. It is always referred to as “The MIT of the East” since the 1930s.

The university receives funding from the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People’s Republic of China and co-constructed by MOE and Shanghai Municipal Government.
