10 Best Bakeries in Shanghai

The Huangpu River runs through the city, which is located on the Yangtze River’s southern bank. Shanghai is China’s most populous urban area and the world’s most populous city with a population of 24.89 million as of 2021.

Because of the large population, bakeries are an alternate stop for a quick snack or bite.

Also, there is a ready market that has attracted a lot of investors in the baking industry. As a result, there are numerous bakeries with high ratings. However, the bakeries are a good option for visitors or tourists to grab a snack!

1. Baker & Spice

Great bakery and spacy area. A place for an afternoon coffee. Food choices are plenty, tasty, and healthy. You can never go wrong here. It just got too crowded and loud sometimes.

This is a nice bakery – one of many for this chain in the central Shanghai area. It can look crowded in the front when you walk in, but there is extra seating in the back.

They have seasonal cold tea and coffee drinks. Their mainstay sandwiches and pieces of bread are fantastic and this is one of the nice locations, too. It gets crowded on weekends. Anfu Road is nice for a short or long walk, too, so it’s a great place to plan a drink or meal along the way.

2. SunFlour
One of the best places in Shanghai for western food. They specialize in bakeries, dessert dishes, and Spanish Bolognese spaghetti.

3. Lilian Cake Shop

Portuguese egg tarts are creamy egg custard filling in a basket-like croissant! It found its way to China through Macau and has been a favorite since. Describing its taste, its more like creme brûlée in a freshly baked croissant.

Lillian’s bakery is a local chain famous for its Portuguese egg tarts! They make the best in Shanghai and have about 50 outlets across the city!

The crust is soft yet flaky and the egg filling is lightly sweet and makes for a mouthwatering Chinese dessert!!

This fresh-out-of-the-oven treat can never go wrong when bought from Lillian’s hence make sure you grab a box of 6 coz one isn’t going to be enough. Very delicious.

4. Park Hotel Deli

We walked past here on the way to a soup dumpling place (Jia Jia Tang Bao) down the road, and we could literally smell the baked goods down the road.

In addition, they sell in packs of 6 for around £4 British pounds – Butterfly Crackers. They are light, buttery, crispy – with a hint of sweetness.

They aren’t particularly amazing but surprisingly, the queues are big. Surprisingly, there is such a big queue for them after tasting them. Perhaps it’s uncommon to have a pastry like this in Chinese cuisine. However, the queues move fast and their staff is friendly.

Recommended for locals and tourists due to their delicious cookies and cakes.

5. Artisan Bakery

Artisan Bakery is near Century Park and is located right next to both the Radisson hotel and the Crowne Plaza hotel. They have a great selection of fresh baked goods, sandwiches, cake, and yogurt. They also service teas and coffees.

You can get a really good breakfast for a very reasonable price. The staff speaks limited English. However, they do not take foreign credit cards so if you happen to make this your stop, please carry cash.

6. Pain Chaud

The coffee is very good and the pastries and baguettes are top class, not just for China but for the world. The owners are Chinese but spoke English and French.

They were clearly French-trained in pastry making and the presentation and quality of baguettes were exceptional.

7. Bread etc

Cozy spot with delicious food and good coffee. They have pastries, pizza, sandwiches, salads and a few types of breakfast.

Once you decide to visit Bread etc, try shakshouka and eggs in Benedict style with salmon. It is very delicious! A good place to try in terms of salads and sandwiches.

8.  La Parisienne

This is such a nice little cafe serving great bread, pastry, salads, sandwiches, coffee and even wine. Close enough to the Huangpu to go to after a walk/bike ride by the river.

Additionally, this is a popular spot, especially for cyclists who are cycling along the river. So close to the cycle track. They also have super fresh French breads and tasty fillings.

It’s a good place to try especially if you happen to be cycling or walking along the river. Well worth the stop!

Also, they have well blended Lemon Fruit tea which is very refreshing and the pastry ( Escargot) is the best. It is a great place to recharge, borrow a book & just relax.

9. Luneurs

Rated 4.7 performance rate, the bakery has four branches in Shanghai. One location is subway line 10 to Shanghai library station. One has to walk only one km, the road is good so a good morning or any time of the day walk. Enjoy the beautiful corners before you arrive to the bakery.

The ice cream is delicious. The texture of the ice cream is sticky and viscous. Actually, it is the texture that the locals love.

The ice cream is best eaten with the crispy biscuits on top. They also have Dark Chocolate. They have salted caramel biscuits which have a delicious taste.

10. mbd

The owner is very friendly. The bakery has a rating of 4.7. They have a wide range of selections.  Assorted variety from bread, cakes, cookies and chocolates.

The most notable feature of Shanghai bakeries is that the personnel is friendly, and the owners are constantly there to guarantee that the business runs smoothly.

Another key feature is the superb quality and texture of the products. Most importantly, they taste great! Customers are certain of returning many times due to the quality of their items, notably the cakes.

As a result, one should never be afraid to go to the bakeries because they all have English-speaking workers who are polite and eager to help.
