Where to Enjoy Taco Tuesday in Rome

In the western world, Tuesdays are an excuse to eat tacos!

The Taco Tuesday tradition is thought to have originated somewhere in the United States, possibly in a bar in Minneapolis. It has since migrated its way into Europe, with Mexican restaurants becoming hotspots on this specific day of the week.

If you’re lucky, your favorite taco spot might even offer special prices for their taco menu on this day. Here’s where to get some good Tuesday tacos in Rome.

La Punta Expendio de Agave in Rome

La Punta Expendio de Agave is an experimental Mexican restaurant on the riverbank of the Trastevere neighborhood.

It’s owned by a brother and sister, who managed to curate this unique menu through their multiple visits to Mexico over the years. The cuisine isn’t authentic, but rather a fusion of traditional dishes combined with modern flavors.

Most importantly, they do tacos. It’s your choice of beef, cod or chicken, plated with their house toppings and sides. Each portion comes with two tacos; personally I will eat four at a time but you can judge your appetite accordingly.

La Punta Expendio de Agave is high end Mexican dining in Rome; expect to pay slightly above average prices here, and even more if you are drinking. They import Mezcal from Mexico itself, and this is one of the few opportunities you’ll get to taste it in the ancient city.

El Pueblito in Rome

El Pueblito sits just outside the Vatican City, and takes pride in being the most authentic Mexican cuisine in Rome (self-proclaimed though probably true!).

It’s a very low-key spot, with a themed dining area and traditional decor through the space. Everyday at el Pueblito is taco day, but come through on a Tuesday evening if you want that festive experience!

Like restaurants in Mexico, tacos here are ordered by the piece. You can put together a combo plate of different meats and toppings all imbedded in soft corn shells. In traditional Mexican cuisine there is no such thing as hard shell tacos, so don’t even ask.

All in all, the food is good, the prices are honest and the service is warm.

Mezcaleria Callejon in Rome

I love Mezcaleria Callejon, but their location in the city center has allowed them to become a bit of a tourist trap with their prices.

This is Mexican street food done to perfection; hence my frustration at not being able to afford to eat here everyday. Thankfully, Tuesdays bring some relief, and Mezcaleria Callejon offers all of their tacos at half price, all day long.

This is the true spirit of Taco Tuesday right here in Rome. There are taco options for all dietary requirements, including some delicious mushroom ones for the vegetarians/vegans out there.

If you’re unable to make it to Mezcaleria Callejon on a Tuesday, then aim for their daily happy hour instead. Each evening between 5pm and 7pm they offer half price off of all drinks and food. Double check your bill before paying, as they sometimes don’t mark down the drinks as promised.

Casa Sánchez in Rome

Casa Sánchez is my favorite spot for tacos in Rome. I love the simplicity of the menu, with just a few select tacos where the recipes have been perfected, and then some burritos with fillings to match.

The also do tamales, which is not something you’ll find in many Mexican restaurants in Rome at all.

Depending on your choice of filling, you’ll receive a plate of modestly dressed tacos, accompanied by a generous lime wedge and a side of traditional guacamole. Cilantro is optional, and if you are impartial to the taste then recommend your entire meal have this herb left out of it.

To really top off your dining experience, order a spicy-rimmed margarita and a side of beans and rice.

Abbey Theatre Irish Pub in Rome

The Abbey Theatre Irish Pub was the last place I expected to find Taco Tuesday taking place in Rome. What’s more, this pub actually does Taco Thursday as well, extending their “Mexican” menu across both days.

I say “Mexican” because this isn’t at all what you’d call authentic to the cuisine. Lovers of Tex-Mex will be right at home at The Abbey; they do all of their tacos hardshell, just like you see in the movies.

No judgement here, some people are just more accustomed to this version of Mexican food and enjoy crumbly tacos with a side of cheesy nachos. So if this sounds like the kind of meal break you’d like from all the pizza and pasta, you know where to go!

The Abbey occasionally also hosts karaoke evenings! In Rome, Irish pubs tend to be the surest spots for this kind of activity, as the city itself has very few isolated karaoke bars.

It goes without saying that this is also a very festive spot in which to watch any big sporting event while in Rome.
