Where to Eat Noodles in Rome

Romans might love their pasta, but they by no means limit themselves to just one kind of noodle. Noodle culture has been embraced within the Italian capital with open arms, offering a diverse range of Asian cuisines throughout the city.

Here are a few spots where I like to eat noodles in Rome.

Sushi e Noodles in Rome

Sushi e Noodles is the restaurant chain that really put Asian noodle culture on the map in Rome. There are a few branches in different neighborhoods in the city center.

The cuisine is Chinese and Japanese fusion. In Asia, noodles are prepared differently depending on their land of origin. Their noodle bowls are an interesting interpretation of Chinese and Japanese cuisines combined.

In addition to their noodle menu they also have full Chines and Japanese food menus; fried rice, sushi and chow fan are standard mains and some diners prefer to order these with a noodle bowl to share as a side.

The branch I visit most frequently would be their location in Prati, just north of the Vatican City. You’re in prime location for sight seeing and guided walking tours once you get here, and the options for global cuisines are very diverse.

Restaurant Dumpling Bar in Rome

This noodle experience was an unexpected surprise while out and about in the southern suburbs of Rome’s city center. While desperately craving dim sum, I wandered over to Restaurant Dumpling Bar as recommended by the internet.

To my delight they not only served some of the best dim sum I’ve found in Rome, but delicious noodle dishes as well.

If you do decide to head over, then don’t leave out one or the other. Have a single portion of dim sum as your starter, followed by a noodle main of your choice. Their dim sum and noodle dishes come in customizable options depending on your fillings of preference. Options are available for vegans and vegetarians.

Dumplings are traditionally a Chinese cuisine; so their noodle dishes are also made authentic to Chinese cooking.

Ramen Bar Akira in Rome

Ramen is the Japanese rendition of noodles. The noodles themselves are usually the same “pulled” ones used in Chinese cooking, it’s the broth and toppings that make use of Japanese flavors like miso, yuzu or soy. Ramen is also traditionally topped with an egg, which other parts of Asia don’t usually do.

The Ramen Bar is near to the Porta San Paolo. I found it after a guided walking tour that took place between this historic part of the city center through to the trendy neighborhood of Trastevere, just across the river.

This is fast becoming the go-to spot for Ramen in Rome. The fact that they offer regular and small portions makes it ideal for families who need to dine with children, something that is not always doable with Ramen cuisine.

Since this is still an up and coming cuisine in Rome, customers who wish to eat egg in their Ramen the traditional way will have to pay a bit extra. Not everyone is a fan of this addition just yet, so it doesn’t come standard.

Wild Ginger in Rome

When in doubt about where to eat good noodles in a western land, heading to the nearest fusion kitchen is usually the safest bet.

Wild Ginger is a Japanese, Chinese and Thai hybrid space with menus for each different cuisine — noodles included! All three of these lands prepare their noodles very differently, so Wild Ginger is one of the only spots in Rome where you have access to all of them under one roof.

Thai noodles are my personal favorite out of all noodle cuisines; Pad Thai in particular is what I will order without thinking twice. Pad Thai is a traditional dish made with rice noodles, tamarind fruit sauce, bean sprouts, peanuts, veggies and a protein of your choice (usually tofu, but chicken or beef are options too).

What’s great about Wild Ginger is that you order using an electronic tablet placed on your table, and everything is brought over as you do so.

Pho 1 in Rome

Pho are Vietnams noodle dishes. Like most Asian noodles you’ll receive broth, protein and rice noodles cooked to perfection. Instead of having toppings inside of the bowl, however, pho is served with a variety of fresh veggies, herbs and sauces as sides to be added at the leisure of the eater.

I love this style of noodle eating; pho is wonderfully customizable for the duration of your dining experience. At Pho 1 you’ll also enjoy a variety of traditional Vietnamese starters like glass spring rolls.

If you’re not familiar with Vietnamese food as of yet you should know that this is one of the lighter of the Asian cuisines; it makes use of a lot of fresh and raw ingredients, instead of coating them in oil like in Chinese cooking, or masking their natural flavors with sauces like in Thai. It goes without saying that this is always a great spot for vegans and vegetarians.
