Where to Buy Organic Food in Rome

As the organic food movement continues to sweep the planet, Rome is getting continuously more and more on board.

You’ll be able to both stock your Airbnb with organic foods, and eat them out at restaurants if you please. There’s even a spot where you can indulge in organic gelato; read on and I’ll tell you all about it!

La Capra Rampante in Rome

I passed this little organic shop one evening while walking home from the Vatican side of the city. It’s tiny and unassuming, but once inside it proves to be an absolute treasure trove for the organic lifestyle.

The front of the store is reserved for all kind of fresh produce; fruits and vegetables both local and imported, all with the organic seal of approval.

Moving further into the store you’ll find your canned foods, sweets, grains and other necessities. They sometimes have ready-made meals as well that are great to grab between sightseeing.

The back of the shop is for all kinds of organic cleaning products, beauty items and household goods.

I try to support this small business as often as I can, especially considering they make a great effort in keeping their prices as low as possible in spite of the trendy organic label.

Simply Market in Rome

You’ll find the Simply Markets all over Rome; they are one of the main grocery stores that keep this city functioning.

Not everything in the stores is organic, but what is will always be clearly marked and identifiable from the non. They also mark off all their vegan and gluten free products to make it easier for shoppers to find suitable items.

Regardless of where you are staying, a Simply Market will usually always be the most convenient spot from which to purchase organic fruits and vegetables. There are over 20 locations in central and greater Rome.

This is where the locals shop, so prices won’t be in the tourist trap region either.

Eataly Roma in Rome

Eataly Roma is where one goes for everything Italian. They stock all of the local brands and products that many people like to take home with them from Rome; Italian olive oils, Italian herbs, Italian meats… you name it.

Again, not everything in Eataly Roma is organic, but the vast majority of the contents are. They usually have everything in both organic or non-organic options, and you can decide if you’d like to pay the extra cost or not.

There is an Italian eatery inside of the store where you can eat traditional meals and baked goods throughout the day. Everything sold here is always organic.

Be warned that Eataly Roma is a tourist trap of note; locals absolutely do not shop here and prices are very high.

Crispy – Bio Market in Rome

I love visiting the Crispy Bio Market when I find myself in the north of Monti. Don’t be fooled by the name, this is more of a cafe than an actual market, but worth the time nonetheless.

You’ll order your organic foods over the counter here. Healthy sandwiches, plates, salads etc. They also have a shopping section which is basically a few shelves with organic products available for purchase. You’ll find things like quinoa, seeds, foods in jars and more.

Just to the left of where you order food there is a small fresh produce section with organic fruits and veggies that can be purchased. What is available depends on what has been delivered that day and you never know what you’re going to get until you arrive.

This is a great spot to enjoy organic meats!

Officina Naturale in Rome

Another fabulous spot for wholesome organic eats is Officina Naturale. This one is in the north of Trevi, and is also more of a cafe than a grocery store.

Everything here is organic, from the fresh juices right through to their breads and milks. They do have a small retail section where certain products can be purchased, but eating in is definitely recommended.

For your convenience, Officina Naturale opens at 6am every single week day. It gives organic eaters somewhere to go from early morning until early dinner time.

Unfortunately they are not open for any business on the weekends as of yet. Hopefully with enough peer pressure we can convince them otherwise!

Günther in Rome

As promised, organic gelato in Rome.

This ice cream parlor sits right on the edge of the Tiber on Rome’s right bank. They are open until 2am every day of the week, so late night ice cream runs are never out of the question.

At Günther they only use organic milk and ingredients to make their gelato. Everything from the fruits to the sweets is certified organic and of the highest quality. This considered, their prices are not at all unreasonable. A single scoop with a cone or cup costs just €3.

To make things sweeter, Günther always keep a range of gluten free and vegan ice creams as well, along with gluten free cones for whoever is in need.

They aren’t able to accept card payments in store, so have cash ready!
