Top 10 Best Beaches near Rome

Rome isn’t as deeply inland as most people assume. Using accessible public transport from the city center, there are dozens of beautiful beaches overlooking the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea.

The Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the Mediterranean, making Rome’s waters amongst the warmest in Europe. These are a few of the beaches I like most; ideal for a day trip or weekend escape.

1. Santa Marinella near Rome

Santa Marinella is blue and bustling; this is the most accurate way of describing it. It’s widely considered to be the best beach near Rome, taking into consideration travel time, spaciousness and overall enjoyment.

There are some good places to eat right along the sand, and many lounge chairs for public use. To get here, simply catch the train from any major station in Rome to the S. Marinella stop.

2. Anzio near Rome

When I’m not in the mood to deal with big crowds, Anzio is my beach of choice. It’s a slightly longer journey; roughly 70 minutes from Rome by train. Catch the train to the Anzio stop from Termini Station in the city center.

This beach was once the landing site for the allied troops who came to help Rome whist under Nazi occupation. A grand fortress sits on the sand, and there are memorials for the fallen soldiers that you can look at.

3. Ostia near Rome

Ostia is the closest beach to Rome. The further you move away from the city, the clearer the water and sands become, but Ostia is a great option if you don’t have a lot of time to waste.

The public beach is preceded by a boardwalk that has an entrance fee. To get to Ostia simply catch any Roman Metro B to Piramide, and from there follow the signs to the trains to Roma-Lido. For Ostia’s main beach you’ll want to get off at Lido Centro, and not Ostia Antica

4. Sperlonga near Rome

Sperlonga is the ultimate beach town near Rome for a weekend away. Organize accommodation for a night or two in this village so you can experience it in its essence.

Sperlonga is a region on the coast boasting a number of picturesque beaches with warm turquoise water. There are grottos and bays galore.

To get here, catch any train from Rome heading in the Naples direction. Get off at Fondi-Sperlonga; the journey takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. From here, there are shuttle busses that take people into and out of the village.

5. Felice Circeo near Rome

The gleaming waters of Circeo are situated roughly 100km south of Rome. This is a beach for anyone looking to be totally immersed in nature whilst sunbathing.

To get here, you’ll need to use a bus. Catch the Circeo busses from the Laurentina Station in Rome. The beach is a 10 minute walk from the final stop. Set aside roughly one and a half hours for travel, one way.

6. Ladispoli near Rome

I thoroughly enjoy how spacious Ladispoli beach is. You can quite literally walk and walk until the crowds eventually disperse and settle into the sand in peace and quiet.

It’s a great beach during off season on those sporadic hot days. Do note, however, that during April the annual Artichoke Festival takes place on the sand.

7. Santa Severa near Rome

If you value waves in your oceans, then Santa Severa is where you are most likely to encounter them near Rome.

This is a gorgeous part of the coast, close to the Tuscan boarder. There is a 9th-century castle right on the sand, making the terrain look and feel even more majestic.

There are daily trains between Rome and Civitavecchia; get off at the Santa Severa station.

8. Sabaudia near Rome

Sabaudia is known for being one of the more private and less crowded beaches near Rome. This is because there is no direct train station at the actual beach.

The mountains in the background of this bay make for a dreamscape, especially when the sea haze comes over.

To get to Sabaudia you have to catch a train from Rome to Priverno-Fossanova. From there, there is a COTRAL bus that can take you to the Sabaudia bus stop. Look out for wooden stairs that take you down to the water.

9. Terracina near Rome

Terracina also doesn’t have a train station next to the actual beach, but for some reason this spot is always packed to the brim. It’s vibrant, it’s festive, and it’s extremely well kept.

Boating is a celebrated activity on these waters, and the rightmost section of the beach is dedicated it. The left is where you’ll find umbrellas and loungers for rent. This is a family oriented beach so expect a lot of kids.

There are hourly trains toward Naples from Rome, take one of these and get off at the Monte S. Biagio stop. From here there are busses that will take you right up to the beach front.

10. Fregene near Rome

Fregene is the beach just after Ostia, so this would be the second closest beach to Rome.

Fregene is distinctly more laid back in nature; almost like an Italian hippie village. Fregene is also much cleaner than Ostia, and is favored by Roman locals.

Each evening, the Singita Miracle Beach Club sets up cushions all over the beach and people enjoy sundowners and sometimes live music.
