The Best Restaurants in the Trastevere, Rome

The Trastevere is Rome’s nightlife hub. It’s where everyone flocks once the sun goes down on the ancient city; a place filled with food and entertainment venues to carry you through to the early hours of the next morning.

The Trastevere has a lot of local cuisine, and a lot of international cuisine. It’s good for both a traditional Italian dining experience, or a break from pizza and pasta when you need it most.

I’ve listed a few of the best restaurants in the area. Remember, the Trastevere is on the left bank of the Tiber, in Rome’s older streets. It’s best to access it by foot as a lot of these roads can’t facilitate cars or public transport.

Grazia & Graziella in the Trastevere

I say this a lot, but there is something very special about Grazia & Graziella. This trattoria ticks all the boxes in terms of service, quality and ambiance.

It’s one of the Trastevere’s finest restaurants, while still minting a casual and welcoming facade. The street seating is full just about every night of the week, and this is definitely where you want to book your table if you’re planning on eating local cuisine while in the Trastevere.

As I said, book your table in advance. The waiting period can be up to two hours long if you try to show up unannounced on a weekend.

Supplì Roma in the Trastevere

If you’ve yet to try a tractional supplì, why not do so in the Trastevere. This might not be the most sophisticated eatery in the neighborhood, but it definitely has some of the best food around.

A supplì is an Italian rice ball usually fried with a tomato sauce. There are different variants of these balls available, with alternate meats and fillings.

At Supplì Roma you’ll be able to try many different kinds of supplì, as well as some great, authentic Roman pizza. It’s a very casual dining space, intended for quick eats between drinking and dancing through the district.

Essenza Wine Bar in the Trastevere

If you’ve come to that point in the trip where another three course, hearty Italian meal is going to send you over the edge, then the Essenza Wine Bar experience is something to consider.

It’s a charming spot that has a home-like feel, with couches and intimate nooks. The menu is simple: cheese and meat platters accompanied by all the Italian wines you can drink.

You’ll be surprised just how filling these cheesy platters are, especially as you wine and dine through until closing. From here, it’s a short walk to many more bars with later closing times to carry your Trastevere evening forward.

Peppo al Cosimato in the Trastevere

The menu at Peppo al Cosimato is traditional Italian. It’s the pizzas and pastas you’ve had in abundance during your time in Italy, but there is something distinctly more enjoyable about this spot.

I’ve yet to put my finger on it. Peppo al Cosimato isn’t the most romantic, nor the most upmarket restaurant on the block, but every dining experience here is a memorable one.

You’ll want to try a pizza and a pasta option, so dine here with at least one other person and share your dishes.

La Punta Expendio de Agave in the Trastevere

I mentioned that the Trastevere holds many continental cuisines. La Punta Expendio de Agave is one of them, exploring Mexican-inspired cooking in an upmarket setting.

This is a really great spot for both dinner and follow up drinks. Dining tends to come to a close around 11pm, and then the festive bar remains open through until 2am.

It really is a treat of a dining experience, especially if you’re in need of that pizza/pasta break. La Punta Expendio de Agave is an exploration of Mexican dishes you may not yet be familiar with, in addition to the usual tacos and burritos.

Coffee Pot Trastevere in the Trastevere

I actually found the Coffee Pot one evening while looking for Mexican food in the Trastevere. La Punta Expendio de Agave was full, and I was adamant on the cuisine.

The Coffee Pot is a surprising yet unexpected spot. The menu is Mexican and Japanese fusion, so you can quite literally have guacamole and chips for starters, sushi as a first main, tacos as a second main and Japanese ice cream for dessert.

It’s unfathomable just home complimentary all of these flavors are to one another; this chef has definitely touched on something revolutionary here.

Bali Bar in the Trastevere

The Bali Bar is my favorite restaurant in the Trastevere. Firstly, the interior makes you want to move in as a permanent resident. It’s a Southeast Asian cove with a wholesome twist.

Then there’s the menu. Traditional Balinese cuisine is served alongside an array of other Indonesian classics. In addition to this, there is a Thai and Vietnamese menu too, making for one very widespread dining experience.

Book in advance and try to go with a group of friends; ordering dishes from each cuisine is a really nice sharing experience.

Cajo & Gajo in the Trastevere

Italian restaurants in the Trastevere know that they have to remain up to scratch at all times in order to stay relevant. There is simple too much competition in this neighborhood for any to slack even slightly.

Cajo & Gajo is one of the few Italian spots where I would actually stand in a queue to get a table. If you make a booking this, of course, won’t be necessary, but that’s my way of equating just how wonderful this spot is.

Cajo & Gajo have a longstanding reputation in the Trastevere, and you’ll notice many of your fellow diners are regulars who probably eat here at least once a week. A very worthwhile experience when dining on this side of the Tiber.
