And once in Rome, you’ll be able to visit those places and take pictures of your favourite series set in the “eternal city”.

Suburra

We can safely say that Suburra was the first original Italian TV series that was distributed by the streaming giant Netflix on 06 October 2017.
Obviously, the series is taken from the 2015 film of the same name which in turn is inspired by the novel by Carlo Bonini and Giancarlo De Cataldo.
The series tells the life and the criminal environment present in the Roman slums among the stories of criminals, political figures and ordinary people.
The central theme is the awarding of contracts for the construction of the Rome Tourist Port in the Ostiense district.
You will find three seasons. The second was on February 22, 2019, and the third was on October 30, 2020.

Luna Park

Luna Park is a series set in Rome in the 60s.  We can catalogue it in the dramatic, sentimental and historical genres.
Destiny will bring together two young and totally different girls. Rosa belongs to a wealthy family and Nora, together with her family, takes care of the rides. Their meeting will generate the discovery of intrigues, and secrets as their past are more intertwined than they may seem in reality. In the first season (for now) you will find only six episodes.
Who knows if the producers will do other seasons and episodes?

Romanzo Criminale

Romanzo Criminale is not a series but a film set in Rome that I recommend you see anyway.
The film was directed by Michele Placido and tells the story of the so-called “gang of the Magliana”.  It was one of the largest criminal organizations that existed in Rome.
This gang of criminals who commit crimes called the Lebanese, the Dandi, the Cold and the Grana are found as adults to fix problems.
Betrayals, murders and twists will make you understand the history of Rome in a fictional way.

Spartacus

I don’t know if it was actually filmed in Rome but Spartacus has scenes from Rome.
This fictional series tells the story of the slave Spartacus and his path to obtain the freedom that will lead him to rebel and fight against his own tormentors.
You will be able to understand the history of the gladiators and their work inside the Colosseum. You can also get an idea of the fights and learn a little more about their weapons and training. There are three seasons and the last “war of the damned” will lead you to victory!

Skam Italia

The seasons address topics such as love, sexuality, mental health, violence and abuse, discrimination and religion.

Other series

Unfortunately, many TV series set in Rome are not yet present on Netflix.
For now, you can enjoy all the ones listed above.
In case you have already seen them and are looking for other series to see set in the beautiful Eternal City then I suggest you look for the following:

1. Dov’è Mario?

Also translated as “Where is Mario?” tells the story of a famous philosopher.
Following an accident, he begins to show signs of his personality disorder.
An alter ego appears in him who represents a vulgar comedian with easy jokes.

2. Il Sistema

Another series that I recommend you to see if you are passionate about Rome is “The system“.
It tells the story of a criminal gang that controls Roman crime and consequently politics, businessmen and industrialists.

And what about movies?
