The Best Cafes in Rome for Fruitarians

Fruitarians are strictly fruit eaters. And traveling as a fruitarian isn’t always the easiest experience, especially in Europe where most of the cultures make use of cooked cuisines only.

As a fruitarian abroad, especially in Rome, you want to look out for juice bars, smoothie bowls, anywhere that advertises açai, or vegan centered cafes. This is your best bet at finding substantial meal options to get you through your trip. Read on and I’ll let you in on a few of the best fruit-friendly spots in the ancient city.

Escosazio in Rome

Escosazio is in the far west of the Trevi Fountain district, on the edge of the Tiber River. It’s one of the last areas in which public transport is available before you have to cross over into the ancient town by foot and explore either at your own leisure or with one of the guided walking tours.

Escosazio is a healthy oriented cafe that does sandwiches, smoothie bowls and a few house salads. They are one of the only cafes in Rome with actual full sized fruit bowls on their menu; and all of the fruits are cut fresh as they are ordered.

You can customize your own bowl or go with one of their house options. There is always granola and yoghurt available, but the fruits on their own are a hearty enough meal even for non fruitarians.

If you’re into açai, then note that Escosazio makes some of the most traditional tasting bowls in town.

Ginger Sapori e Salute in Rome

Ginger Sapori e Salute is interesting because it’s a full blown bistro-type restaurant that has an entire menu dedicated to fruit based dishes. You can enjoy steaks, seafood pastas, rare-cooked burgers and a bowl of fruit all at the same time.

The fruits are part of their brunch menu that is served all day. If you’re a fan of a good brunch then their pancakes are a must!

Although they do fruity granola bowls and smoothies, the fruit platter is what I want to recommend to all the fruitarians needing to eat in Rome. They prepare it quite extravagantly on a grand bed of shaved ice. Different fruit options are cut fresh and served cold.

Each platter is generously portioned and probably sharable between two people.

In terms of the rest of their menu, Ginger has options for any and every dietary requirement; vegans, vegetarians, gluten free eaters, lactose free eaters, fruitarians and everyone in between will be right at home.

Fruit Lab in Rome

On a sticky, hot day during the Roman summer I stumbled into this fruit spot in search of something light to fill my body.

The fruit lab do a variety of health meals, as well as fruit plates that are completely customizable. You’ll have your pick of the fruits of the day (depending on what they’ve been delivered) and they’ll chop it all up for you to sit and munch on.

Fruitarians are in their element at the Fruit Lab. In addition to your plate you can also have any of the fresh fruits and veggies pressed into juices. Oddly enough, this is also a popular coffee spot for the locals that live in Ostiense.

I urge fruitarians traveling to Rome not to overlook this spot. They open early enough to cater your breakfast, and close late enough that you can also eat lunch and dinner if you would like to. You won’t find a customizable fruit plate after 6pm anywhere else in Rome, that’s for sure.

Caffè Vaticano in Rome

The Caffe Vaticano skipped right past fruit plates and platters, straight to a giant fruit bowl instead.

The cafe is on the northernmost boundary of the Vatican City. A good guided walking tour will take you right past it, heading west from the center of Prati.

Fruitarians must order the Vaticano fruit bowl. It’s a giant serving bowl filled with a plethora of fresh fruits: watermelons, bananas, strawberries, grapes, mango, sweet melons, pineapple, kiwifruits and whatever else they managed to get fresh stock of.

These big bowls can feed around three fruitarians at a time, four at a push. If you’d prefer a smaller serving, the cafe also does fruit plates with watermelon and cherries, or small bowls of just strawberries, cherries or a fruit of your choice.

It’s a fruit eaters dream cafe.

Barnum Cafè in Rome

Barnum Cafe is back in the Trevi west, close to the first fruit spot we looked at in this round up.

Barnum doesn’t have anything special on the menu to specifically cater to fruitarians, but I have eaten here a few times and had something customized very easily.

Their granola bowls are usually topped with yoghurt and a generous portion of fresh fruit. If you explain to your server that you can only eat fruits, they will happily substitute the yoghurt and granola for a bigger serving of the freshly cut fruits.

It’s usually a combination of bananas, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, kiwi fruits and pineapple.

Must see sights within walking distance? The Roman Pantheon — bellissima!
