The Best Acai Bowls in Rome

This piece is going to be a lot shorter, and a lot sweeter, than my usual roundups. The reason being that Rome is significantly further behind all other European cities when it comes to the phenomenon that is acai.

The acai berry crazy never really caught on in the Italian capital. Despite being a superfood with astounding health benefits, acai bowls aren’t found on the breakfast and brunch menus in cafes around the city.

As far as I know, or rather from what I have found, the following three cafes are the only spots where one can purchase acai in Rome. The dish is an important component in the diets of a lot of vegans and fruitarians, so read on if tracking down this berry is a must during your trip!

Escosazio in Rome

This first acai spot is in the exact neighborhood where I would have expected to find a superfood.

The right bank of the Tiber, across from the Vatican City, is a busting tourist area with many attractions, shopping districts and streets suitable for guided walking tours. Because the area attracts people from all over the world, we find cuisines from all over the world here as well.

Escosazio happens to be one of the best cafes in Rome for fruitarians thanks to their fruit bowl options. It was a short leap to them including an acai bowl on the menu, and it’s about the best you’ll find in all the city.

The portions are generous, the toppings are cut fresh and prices aren’t bad considering this is an imported superfood. You’ll pay €7 for your choice of bowl, and a few euros extra if you add additional toppings.

I must mention that the rest of the Escosazio menu is worth a closer look as well. It’s a great health food spot for all dietary requirements; a space where meat eaters and vegans can dine in perfect harmony.

Ginger Sapori e Salute in Rome

Almost as rare as acai in Rome are organic cafes. Ginger is known as the go-to for organic dining that is open from morning until night.

This is another spot that has taken the time to cater sufficiently to everyone who chooses not to consume meat. They even do a giant fruit bowl as a menu item; which is fabulous for fruitarians, yet unheard of elsewhere in Rome and probably Italy.

Their acai bowls are part of their breakfast and brunch menus. On quieter afternoons you can sometimes sway the kitchen into preparing one even if it’s past selling time. Like I said, Ginger are only too happy to accommodate anyone who is limited in terms of what they can and cannot eat.

Not many people know this, but Ginger have a second location in the neighborhood below the one I usually frequent. The second one is closer to the Trevi Fountain. It’s also organic and offers most of the menu that the bigger branch up north does, acai bowls included!

Vitaminas 24 in Rome

Vitamins 24 is a little vegan dream out in the middle of nowhere in Rome’s far east.

The menu is phenomenal and I would eat here everyday if it weren’t such a journey to get to. All of the food is entirely plant based and organic; these are some of the best vegan burgers you’ll find in the city.

The acai is traditional and topped with fresh fruit and their homemade, organic granola. It’s a hearty portion of the superfood; again, I do wish the cafe was closer to the city center because if you could eat this every morning you’d make your way through the city on foot all day without that midway crash.

The neighborhood is called Pigneto. If you’re interested in knowing more about it, or plan to make the day trip just for good acai, then custom guided walking tours can be arranged.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
OPENING HOURS: Monday to Sunday – 12pm to 12am
ADDRESS: Via Ascoli Piceno, 40, 00176 Roma RM, Italy
METRO STATION: Pigneto

If you happen to know of any other secret acai spots that I have yet to hunt down, please do let me know! Rumor has it there is a juicery in Trastever that offers acai in the form of a smoothie. As well as a few health food markets that have some frozen sachets of the berry in their freezer sections.

I plan to investigate, and will provide updates accordingly! Buon appetito!
