How to Enjoy Rome When Single

For some, traveling Rome while single might sound like the most daunting experience in the world, especially if other couples will be accompanying you.

On the contrary, Rome is one of the most beautiful cities to experience as a lone wolf. It’s not daunting at all, but rather reassign and liberating for one’s solo ego.

Yes, you’ll pay by lovers almost every step of the way. Yes, watching them song next to the Trevi Fountain might feel like a punch in the gut. But there are many, many ways to enjoy Rome while single — read on!

Don’t Overthink It

This is your first step to having a truly fulfilling trip by yourself in the Italian capital.

Rome as a lovers city is largely just a romanticized persona we’ve given this charming city. Even movies we watched as teenagers (Lizzie McGuire) suggested that thirteen year olds traveling to Rome as part of middle school graduation would fall in love with a mysterious Italian along the way.

One you let this preconception go, you’ll be free to enjoy, and even love, Rome with you, yourself and you!

Let go of the expectation and ground yourself into the ancient city. The magic will come in due course.

Hang Out in the Trastevere

This neighborhood on the Roman left bank is haven for singles and youth culture. Everyone visiting Rome for the first time needs to land up here at least one evening during their trip; starting with dinner in one of the many restaurants displaying cuisines from around the world, and following it with any of the district’s bars & clubs.

This part of town is ideal for anyone looking for love while in Rome, or just looking to have a good time with other people on similar journeys.

In the Trastevere you can easily make connections and fast-friends, so when your coupled up travel partners go to bed at 11pm you have a crew to venture with.

The Trastevere is the social hub of Rome. You really can’t feel alone for too long here.

Get Onto Roman Tinder (For Fun)

This is something that more singles should do while traveling Europe. Tinder out here really isn’t so bad, and you’re likely to make quick, easy connections with other travelers also looking to enjoy their time in the city.

If you do decide to meet up with someone you’ve met via your cellphone screen, then be sure to take precautions when doing so. Always meet in busting, public spaces where there are other people present to witness the exchange.

The piazzas of the city center are great meeting places for blind dates, as are any of the bars in Monti or the Trastevere. You can even opt to meet right next to the Trevi Fountain during daylight hours when it’s at its busiest. Perhaps you’ll end up being the kissing couple by the end of the night.

Try New Sports in Rome

I don’t think traveling singles take enough advantage of the opportunities that are available to them in terms of trying new sports.

If you are single in Rome but bars and nightlife aren’t really your forte, then consider joining in at the many sporting complexes around the city. You can take part in activities you’re already familiar with, such as tennis, swimming or football. You can also try something new such as fencing, yoga or even skiing (day trip for this one!).

The Roman sporting communities are really fun ways to engage with the local people, make friends and possibly secure further activities to get involved in during your stay.

Tour as Many Museums as Possible in Rome

This is one of the best parts about being single in Rome, and I say this only because I’ve experienced one too many couple fights over who wants to go to which museum when time is of the essence.

Rome’s museums and historical sights are abundant, and need to be explored in a timeous fashion. Once inside, you’ll also very much appreciate being able to move at your own pace, unrestricted by the presence of a partner.

Of course, this is but a simple pleasure that comes with being single in Rome. An enjoyment that few actually get to experience in their lives.

Do one lap around the Colosseum in the peak of summer and let me know if you’d really prefer a partner & some nagging kids by your side…

Enjoy Dining Alone in Rome

Seemingly morbid from an outsiders perspective, but this was personally my most enjoyable part of being single in Rome. ‘

No one to eat your food. No one to even pick at your food once it arrives on the table.

If Italians teach us anything, it’s that food is to be appreciated, made with love, and every bite savored. Dining out and about in Rome while single means every meal experience will go by unrestricted, free of distraction or partner influence.

You can also eat anywhere you like. Falafel three nights in a row? Go for it. Your decision implicates no one.

Rome is a food journey of note. Take it all in!

Enjoy Being on Your Own Time in Rome

Like dining alone in Rome, being single also comes with the perk of being on your own time as you travel. If you’re traveling with other couples and you’re the only single one, this is also reason enough for you to break away from time to time & enjoy some excursions with yourself.

Leave the couples to their coupling, you’re here to treat yourself and do absolutely everything you want to do, when you want to do it. Welcome!
