Dim Sum in Rome: Where To Go

If dim sum is on your list of preferred cuisines then you’ve come to the right place. At some point in Rome, all that pizza and pasta is going to become a bit monotonous, and you’ll crave something to shake things up a bit.

When this happens to me, my go-to is dim sum dining. Granted, there aren’t a lot of spots in Rome worth going out of your way for just for dim sum, but I like to think the following five are.

Mu.Mu Ristorante & Dim Sum in Rome

When I said go out of your way, I meant it. This first dim sum spot is definitely one of the top few in the city, but it’s situated in the deep south east and not really one you can “pop into” between sightseeing or guided walking tours.

You’ll come here for a planned lunch or dinner. And don’t make the mistake of showing up on a Monday expecting them to be open, as so many do. They also close for siesta between 3pm and 6pm, so don’t make that mistake either.

During lunch time you can do their excellent dim sum special that costs just €9. The food is traditional Chinese, and made to perfection without too much grease and oil.

It’s a small restaurant, and if you’re concerned about space you can easily book over the phone. But I have shown up unannounced every time I’ve eaten here and never had a problem getting a table.

Hari in Rome

Something that doesn’t happen often in Rome is being able to combine sushi dining with dim sum dining. Not many of the sushi eateries in Rom include dim sum on their menus, as it would make them more of a fusion restaurant as opposed to just authentic Japanese.

Hari doesn’t mind, and has been serving some of the best sushi in the city for a long, long time. Their starters and sides menu is where you’ll find their dim sum options. Combining the two cuisines makes for the perfect shared dining experience; definitely visit with a friend who agrees.

Hari is right by the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano and the Basilica di San Giovanni a Porta Latina, south of Monti and the Colosseum. They too close for siesta between 3pm and 7pm daily.

Dim Sum Fine Asian Cuisine in Rome

If the pope ate dim sum it would be from this hole-in-the-wall spot right outside of the Vatican City.

Dim Sum Fine Asian Cuisine is a no frills, affordable and relatively good quality Asian eatery offering dishes from all over the land. Dim sum is a major focal point for this restaurant, and you can stuff yourself on the dish without spending too much.

What makes them unique is that they cater to gluten free eaters as well; something I’ve not found elsewhere for dim sum in Rome.

If you’re yet to take a guided walking tour through this part of the ancient city, you should know that you’re in prime position for some great restaurants and boutique shopping. Dim Sum Fine Asian shares a block with Dolce Maniera; the famous cake and coffee house that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I’m sure the pope eats here too.

Gyoza Ristorante in Rome

Another fusion kitchen that makes all your favorite Asian dishes under one roof. Gyoza does ramen, dim sum and sushi at a quality & price that will make you swoon.

I am always taken by how easy it is to get a table here. The food alone should have people lining up outside the door, not to mention the pricing. But Gyoza avoids the major tourist hub and is happy to cater quietly to the locals who know about it.

Locals in Rome actually say that this neighborhood is an up and coming area of glamour and elite living. I really hope not, or Gyoza will have to up their prices to pay their rent. Petition to keep the gentrification out?

Restaurant Dumpling Bar in Rome

The Restaurant Dumpling Bar has made a name for itself as being the dumpling house that stays as close to traditional dumping recipes as possible. It’s a favorite spot for Asian immigrants living in Rome, and the space is always packed with eager people wanting to get a table.

The dumplings are superb. You won’t find any generic, frozen balls of dough here. Everything is made fresh to order and they also offer dumpling soups (another traditional dish not always found in Rome).

If you want to know how fresh your dumplings are you can simply glance over to the kitchen window, where you’ll see the masters at work preparing your plates right there and then.

Can vegans and vegetarians eat here too? Why yes they can.
