When I talk of street food in Rome, I’m not talking about actual food being sold on the streets as the Romans would have done back in ancient times.

I’m talking about small scale, semi-fast food eateries around the city with creative cuisines concepts forming their menus. Food made quickly, and eaten easily, be it seated at a table or strolling the surrounding streets.

Rome has a great street food scene — here are some of the better spots:

Coney Island Street Food in Rome

Theme parks can generally be trusted to provide some great street food options to keep attendees fueled throughout the day. Inspired by New York’s biggest theme park, Coney Island Street Food has become a renowned sensation in Rome.

If you’re staying anywhere near the Vatican museums then you’ll be in walking distance to this spot at all times.

This is by no means a health food stop; expect everything to be drenched in sauce and cheese.

Here you’ll eat pulled pork sandwiches, flat breads with sweet or savory toppings, sushi burritos, overloaded burgers, sticky wings, bagels and hotdogs.

Coney Island Street Food also does a very experimental deep fried chocolate bar, making use of Mars, Snickers and Bounty bars in the process.

Keep a close eye on the hours of operation; they close for close to five hours every afternoon.

Mama Eat Street Food in Rome

You might have already seen Mama Eat Street Food somewhere on social media. They are responsive for the oversized paper cones filled to the brim with deep fried foods of sorts.

Packed with French fries, chicken and/or calamari — Mama Eat uses absolutely no gluten in the bread coating of their street eats, making everything in store suitable for individuals with Celiacs.

If you’re not in the mood for a high-piled cone, then opt for a street pizza or panini instead. For dessert they do deep fried donuts drizzled with Nutella. I should mention that the pizzas and donuts are gluten free as well!

Mama Eat is also situated close to the Vatican, on the city’s left bank. They recently launched their Mama Eat delivery service catering the majority of their menu in and around the city.

Mammò Street Food in Rome

Mammò looks to keep the cuisine authentic Italian, but at the same time seeks to break away from the usual pizza and pasta so readily available everywhere else in the city.

Instead they bring us a unique sandwich shop, catering delicious paninis and bagels topped with traditional, fresh ingredients. Cheeses and cured meats are important to this country, and Mammò’s selection will pull your choice of sandwich together.

In addition to this, they also do some interesting pancake stacks and salads, alongside some local wines & beers. As far as street food in Rome goes, this is authentic to both the cuisine and the nature of this type of dining.

Mammò Street Food holds a great little spot in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome. Their quick success allows them to keep their doors open from 8am through until 2am, seven days a week.

Scialla The Original Street Food in Rome

Back up to the Vatican district for another spot that keeps things authentically Italian. Scialla does so far more literally than Mammò’s; this is local pizza and pasta served street food style, everyday of the week.

At Scialla you’ll be able to choose from a selection of ready-made pizzas patiently awaiting your arrival from behind the counter. If none of these spark your interest, you’ll be able to order a custom pizza of your choice, served in quadrants on a decent sized plate.

The pasta menu is always made to order, and Scialla keeps it simple with a Bolognese, a lasagne, a gnocchi and a marinara ravioli. Adjustments are optional!

It’s a great spot to grab quick, easy Italian cuisine when you really can’t be bothered with a formal, sit down lunch or dinner.

Mató Street Food in Rome

Mató Street Food recently opened a second location in the city, which is very exciting for street food lovers. Particularly those who look for this kind of food late in the evening.

Mató’s hours of operation vary depending on the day of the week. But from Wednesday through Saturday one can dine here up until 3:30am each morning. On the other days, Mató closes around 2am, sometimes earlier. Be sure to double check just before heading through.

The cuisine is a creative take on Italian pizza. You’ll find ready-made pizzas in the restaurant, and then a selection of pizza-inspired panini sandwiches that you can fill to the brim with your favorite toppings.

Mató Street Food starts at around just €2.50 per slice, and around €5 per sandwich. They have options for meat eaters as well as vegetarians; vegans can get creative and work around the cheese quite easily!
