10 Great Places for Beer in Rome

On the surface level, Rome can feel like an endless labyrinth of great wines and freshly ground espresso. Delve a little deeper and you’ll find Italians are big fans of beer, too. Ever heard of a Peroni?

Here are ten spots where this alcoholic beverage makes headlines in Rome.

1. Brasserie 4:20 in Rome

Lovers of beer, burgers and chips flock to this gem of a spot in the Monteverde area of Rome’s left bank.

Brasserie 4:20 is a local take on the traditional brasseries found in places like France. They have a wide variety of beers, and customers treat this space as more of a pub hangout than formal dining establishment.

Some regard Brasserie 4:20 as the “best draught beers in Rome”, what do you think?

2. BrewDog Roma in Rome

This next treat for beer lovers is right next to the exit of the Colosseum. Not only does BrewDog serve an impressive range of Scottish beers, they actually brew them on site.

This micro-brewery has an alternating range of beers at all times. In addition to their Scottish brews, they have some local blends as well.

This is a really wonderful beer spot for anyone in need of a break from Peroni or Morreti.

3. Open Baladin in Rome

Open Baladin is a very nice spot on the right bank where craft beer is the order of every day.

Their range is highly impressive, even a bit overwhelming at times. I recommend doing their beer flight that gets you a tasters portion of five of the best beers for just €18.

The smoked ale proved to be my favorite, surprisingly.

You’ll find the bar at Bir and Fud lined with taps offering micro-beers from across Italy. Not only is it a great spot in which to hang out, it’s also a really wonderful pizzeria.

This is also one of few spots in Rome that caters a decent variety of ciders to people who actually don’t enjoy the tastes of beer.

5. Roma Beer Company in Rome

I find the Campo de’ Fiori to be one of the most beautiful public spots in Rome, and the existence of this beer spot right on the square makes it all the more sweeter.

The name ‘Roma Beer Company’ would suggest this spot is concerned with beers and only beers. On the contrary, this is more of a gastropub and their food menu is treated with equal importance.

All in all, if you’re in the market for a really memorable dinner overlooking a historic Roman landmark, it doesn’t get much better than this.

6. Hopside in Rome

Beer lovers and wine drinkers come together in harmony at Hopside. They have carefully crafted a menu of as many wines as they have beers, making for a harmonious spot in which to lose an hour or two.

Their menu offers delicious burgers and other street foods like ramen. Steer clear of the seafood rice dish — not my fav.

Ale, ale and more ale is the order of the day here at My Ale, another spot just a short stroll from the Campo de’ Fiori in the city center.

This is the widest variety of beers you’ll under one roof you’ll find in Rome. They hold all of the locally made ones, as well as imported beers from around the world. This is also one of the only beer spots in the city to offer free WiFi.

10. Queen Makeda Grand Pub in Rome

I must admit that it wasn’t the beer that initially brought me to Queen Makeda; it was the tacos.

Upon arrival, however, I soon learned that their array of micro-beers are the real crowd pleasers, so much so that Queen Makeda have gone ahead and created a beer flavored tiramisu on their menu. When in Rome, I guess?
