Marjorie Williams – travel blogger

Every other week, Discover Walks will share with some great insight from Travel bloggers from around the world who fell in love with Paris. They will share their favorites addresses and things to do while in Paris. Because genuine advice and stories are so important to us, in addition to our born-and-raised Parisian tour stories, we now bring you real advice from fellow travelers.

Bonjour Marjorie, can you tell us more about who you are?

I’m a food and travel writer with a passion for markets. The markets that I know best—so far!—are in France since I spent months researching them for my books. I was born in York, Pennsylvania. Some of my earliest memories involve going to the market with my mother who was interested in healthy and local foods. That got me hooked. I live in Boston and spend considerable time on the south coast of Massachusetts.

Why did you start writing marjorierwilliams?

To create a place where I can share what I discovered during my travels and in my home region. Also, to connect with others around the globe who share similar interests in food, markets, and travel.

Why did you start traveling?

It was partly work-related and largely pleasure! I’ve always regarded travel as exciting and educational. Travel pushes us out of our comfort zone. The chance to explore unfamiliar places is not only fun but also makes us better people by exposing us to different cultures and understanding our own place in the world differently.

What’s special about your blog?

The expertise that I can provide about markets in Paris and Provence, and elsewhere in the world. My blog reflects my varied experiences and my enthusiasm for exploring.

What would be your top 3 things to do in Paris?

  • Pick a market destination for the morning (see ‘Markets of Paris’ for details on which, when, and where).
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch from provisions bought at the market.
  • Sightsee around that neighborhood during the afternoon. If I can add a fourth, it would be to go to a café and hang for a while. Sit, watch, read, and absorb the ambience.

Your Top 3 good addresses in Paris?

  • Poilâne for breads and punitions cookies (8, rue du Cherche-Midi in the 6th arr.).
  • Les puces, or flea markets, at Porte de Vanves and Clignancourt/Saint-Ouen on weekend mornings.
  • For a quiet break, the small park by Sainte-Clotilde church with its twin spires (rue las Cases, 7th arr.).

I would also like to mention that I’ll be speaking and signing books on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, 6-7 pm at WH Smith (248, rue de Rivoli), a terrific bookshop and tearoom in the center of Paris.

Your favorite landmark in Paris?

Pont Alexandre III, a bridge that’s distinguished by its grandeur, views, and location.

What is your favorite neighborhood in Paris?

The 7th for its relative calm and many interesting shops, restaurants, and cafés. I like to stroll along rue de l’Université, rue Saint-Dominique, and rue Cler.

Could you give us your recommendation to first timers in Paris?

Explore markets, wander aimlessly, and stop frequently. Allow lots of room for spontaneity. Relax and enjoy!

Thank you so much, Marjorie, keep on enjoying Paris!

Merci beaucoup :-)
