Hugo Hadrien Dominique Lloris is a French professional footballer. He plays as a goalkeeper for Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. Lloris captains the France national team. He has been named thrice Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year by the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP).

Lloris began his career with his hometown club OGC Nice. Making his debut as a teenager in October 2005. After three seasons at the club, Lloris moved to seven-time Ligue 1 champions Olympique Lyonnais. 

Lloris won several domestic awards in his first season. Together with Lyon they received European award nominations for his performances in the UEFA Champions League. Lyon reached the semi-finals for the first time. He joined Tottenham in 2012 and was instrumental in the club reaching the Champions League final in 2019.

Lloris is a French international who has played for his country at the under-18, under-19, and under-21 levels. Prior to his senior debut, he was a member of the under-19 team. They won the 2005 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Lloris was born on December 26, 1986, to an upper-class family in the Mediterranean city of Nice, France. His French mother was a lawyer, and his father is a Spanish-born banker based in Monte Carlo. Gautier, his younger brother, was a central defender for his older brother’s former club OGC Nice. 

Lloris excelled at tennis as a child. He played until the age of 13 before deciding to focus on football. He was one of the top players in his age group, ranking high in the country’s national standings. 

Lloris attended Nice’s Lycée Thierry Maulnier until 2004.

2. He started playing at the age of six

Lloris began playing football at the age of six at CEDAC (Centre de Diffusion et d’Action Culturelle). A local cultural center in Nice’s Cimiez neighborhood. The center provided a variety of activities.

Lloris played a variety of positions in the center, including attack, before moving to goalkeeper. Coaches started noticing his impressive goalkeeping qualities. Lloris excelled at the position, attracting the attention of former OGC Nice goalkeeper and French international Dominique Baratelli. He suggested that he join his former club. Lloris joined Nice’s youth academy when he was ten years old.

Hugo Lloris began playing in a senior team of Nice B in 2002 after being promoted from the Nice youth team. His first match was on October 25, 2005, against Chateauroux.

On March 18, 2006, Hugo Lloris made his league debut for the team. Lloris participated in 20 Champion National 2 matches with his team. Since 2005, he has also been a member of the Nice squad on several occasions. He played 77 Ligue 1 matches for Nice before leaving the club in 2008.

4. Lloris relocated to Lyon

Hugo Lloris joined Lyon for a fee of £7.65 million. He made his debut in the 2008-09 season against Toulouse in August 2008. He kept clean sheets against Lorient, Saint-Étienne, and Grenoble in the three games that followed. Lloris was named the league’s best goalkeeper and a member of the Team of the Year.

Hugo Lloris established himself as one of the world’s most visible players during his career in Lyon. He has received numerous awards. Lloris was also a member of the teams that won the Coupe de France (2011-12) and the Trophee des Champions.

5. Hugo Lloris signed for Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris was transferred to Tottenham Hotspur on August 31, 2012. He was transferred for a fee of €12.60 million plus 20% of future profit. Later, in September 2012, he made his official debut for the club against Lazio in a UEFA Europa League match.

In October 2012, Lloris made his Premier League debut against Aston Villa. In December 2016, he extended his contract until 2022.

Hugo Lloris has now played in 182 games and spent six seasons with the club. In 2015, he and his teammates finished second in the Football League Cup. His current teammates include Harry Kane, Dele Alli, and others.

6. He led France to victory in 2010

Lloris captained France for the first time in a 2-1 victory over England at Wembley Stadium on November 17, 2010.  After leading France out six more times on an interim basis, manager Laurent Blanc named him first-choice captain of the national team ahead of UEFA Euro 2012.

Lloris started for his country in the final tournament, helping them reach the quarter-finals before losing 2-0 to eventual champions Spain. 

7. Lloris failed to save France during UEFA Euro 2020

Lloris was named to France’s squad for UEFA Euro 2020 on May 18, 2021.  On 28 June 2021, he saved a penalty taken by Ricardo Rodriguez in the 55th minute of France’s Round of 16 match against Switzerland. 

After a 3-3 tie, the game was decided by a penalty shoot-out. France was eliminated from the tournament after Lloris failed to save a single Swiss penalty.

8. Hugo Lloris married his childhood sweetheart

On July 6, 2012, Hugo Lloris married his childhood sweetheart, Marine Lloris. She’s the founder and owner of Manege en Sucre, a children’s wear brand and accessories. Before their marriage, the couple had a daughter, Anna Rose Lloris, who was born on September 23, 2010.

On February 24, 2014, the couple welcomed their second child, Guiliana Lloris. Marina has a degree in both human resources and law.

Hugo Lloris and Marine first met at a Nice high school in 2002. They dated for about ten years. The couple exchanged vows in a small ceremony at St. Francis Church de-Paule in Nice.

9. He’s a Nike brand ambassador

Hugo Lloris makes a lot of money by endorsing different brands. He has been a Nike endorser since 2010. His favorite gloves have been the Uhlsport Eliminator Super grip. These companies also pay him a lot of money to use their products.
