A 7-year spell at North London is over for Swiss midfielder

Granit Xhaka is on the verge of leaving Arsenal, and his departure at the end of the season is now all but guaranteed.

In his seven years in North London, the Swiss midfielder has experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, going from captain to outcast to vital player again under Mikel Arteta. However, the Gunners are prepared to make a profit while they still can because they have no plans to keep him through the summer of 2024.

The Swiss international has probably divided fans’ opinions at the Emirates more than any other player in recent memory, but no one can deny his loyalty or the incredible season he enjoyed in 2022–23.

During his rather turbulent career in red and white, Xhaka has experienced depressing lows and exhilarating highs, but there’s no doubt that he’ll leave the club with his head held high after putting together a remarkable season that, for much of the season, appeared to be headed for Premier League glory.

Xhaka wants to leave the club this summer in search of a new challenge, according to Chris Wheatley of London World. The 30-year-old has informed the Arsenal of his plans, and Mikel Arteta is apparently willing to approve a sale if an offer between £15 million and £20 million is received.

The player and manager get along well, and Arteta was crucial to Xhaka’s comeback after the Emirates crowd booed him off during a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in 2019.

This season, the midfielder has found fresh life in a more advanced midfield role, contributing seven assists to his five Premier League goals. He has been a constant presence for the Gunners this season, and his upcoming departure will leave a huge hole in the locker room. Despite no longer wearing the captain’s armband, Xhaka served as the club’s moral guide.

The 30-year-old has been mentioned in connection with a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, and a return to Germany does appear likely.

This summer, Arsenal needs to replace their entire midfield. Before the 2023–24 season, the engine room will receive at least two new additions, with Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo among the club’s top priorities.
