Paolo Banchero predicts struggling for Wembanyama

Wembanyama is currently the hottest basketball prospect this year and all NBA teams would be hoping to land him. It is no surprise that the French phenom is taking the basketball world by storm and his trajectory does not seem to slow down anytime.

Wembanyama stands at a staggering 7’4”, 8-foot wingspan and is the most promising prospect since LeBron James who made his NBA debut over two decades ago.

As teams will be looking to get him to their roster, the teams with the worst records in the just-ended regular season stand the highest chance to get the highest lottery pick which will give them the chance to pick the top players.

Currently the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and the Detroit Pistons each hold a 14% chance to land the first overall pick and they will all be hoping to land Victor.

Wembanyama’s talent has garnered attention all over the world and numerous substantial people have been heaping praise on the 19-year-old.

Some notable names who have publicly proclaimed the recognition of Wembanyama’s talent include Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Magic Johnson.

The legendary Los Angeles Lakers star and 5X NBA champion Magic Johnson even proceeded to call Wembanyama the “best player in the world.”

All these praises to Victor didn’t stop 2022 NBA draft overall first pick Paolo Banchero from saying that Wemby will have to put in work to live up to the expectations.
Banchero was drafted by the Orlando Magic and all eyes were on him to perform optimally. He has however lived up to the expectation.

On Tuesday, April 25, 2023, Paolo Banchero of the Orlando Magic was announced as the clear winner of the NBA Rookie of the Year award. With 98 out of 100 first-place votes and 494 of a possible 500 points, Banchero dominated the poll.

The No. 1 overall choice in the 2022 NBA Draft, Banchero, averaged 20 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game this year. Because he exceeded expectations to win Rookie of the Year, his remarks on Wembanyama had weight. He has experienced it firsthand.

In an interview with Marca, Banchero said, “His hype is a lot bigger than my hype. He’s going to have it probably worse than I did, but I’d tell him to just enjoy it. I’m sure he’s dreamed of this for a while and a lot comes with it, but it’s also a lot that you gain from it, a lot of good things as well. I’d tell him to embrace it all and shoot, have fun. It’s going to be a dream come true for him.”

Those are words coming from the 2023 NBA Rookie of the Year and Victor will be looking to win Rookie of the Year come 2024.

Paolo Banchero’s comments follow after he had compared his teammate Bol Bol and Wembanyama. He said,” Everyone talks about the Victor dude from France. I’m not trying to compare them, but Bol’s 7-foot-2 shoots threes brings it up the court, makes passes, and blocks shots. I feel like people kind of forget about him, but Bol’s a freak of nature.”

Victor will be looking to live up to the hype and the team that lands him would be lucky to have him. As D-day gets closer we will see how Victor’s progress fairs on, will he be following Banchero’s advice or will he forge a different path for himself?
