French Prodigy Knew The Spurs Would Land The First Pick
The hype around Wembanyama keeps growing as each day goes by, especially now that the NBA draft has already happened.
The event took place on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, and saw the San Antonio Spurs win the first pick in the NBA draft that is set to happen on Thursday, June 2023.
The San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons and the Houston Rockets were tied at 14% that being the highest possibility to land the number one pick and the Spurs were lucky enough to edge out their rival in landing the first overall pick.
Getting the first overall pick means the Spurs will get a chance to land the number one prospected basketball player this year. Victor Wembanyama is a name that needs no introduction.
At only 19 years old, the hype surrounding this French teenager is incomparable to any except that which LeBron James was getting when he was about to enter the league.
The sensational youngster is set to take the league by storm and the basketball world can’t wait to see how he fairs once he gets to the NBA.
As things stand, it looks like the universe wanted Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs to link up somehow given some incidents that pointed to the obvious.
For starters, the Spurs drafted Wembanyama’s fellow compatriot Tony Parker in 2001 as the 28th overall and Tony went on to win four NBA Championships gaining the 2007 NBA Finals MVP.
Another reason to believe Wemby could have ended up at Spurs is that the lad was ecstatic that the Spurs got the first pick.
Talking to CBS, Wembanyama said, “There is a special relationship between France and the Spurs because of Tony Parker, of course, and also Boris Diaw. I know half of France, if not the whole country, wanted the Spurs to have the first pick. So I was watching everybody and everybody was happy, so I was happy.”
In addition to that, Wembanyama also said that he had a gut feeling that the Spurs would win the first pick in the 2023 draft lottery.
The Mirror quotes Wembanyama saying,” Not to brag, but I knew what was going to happen and I actually recorded myself saying it this morning on the way to practice. So yes, the universe told me. Dreams, feelings… it happens sometimes, but that’s never wrong, it’s right.”
With this revelation, it looks like every sign pointed to the Spurs for the chance to draft the French phenom and for sure it was good news for the Texas-based franchise.
The streets in France went crazy with the news celebrating the chance Victor will get to go to San Antonio.
Tony Parker extended his congratulations to Wembanyama by tweeting a childhood photo of Wembanyama wearing a Spurs Jersey and captioning it,” Yes, he’s going to Spurs! I’m proud of you.”
From the hype of the entire France to approval from legendary players like Tony Parker, the world can’t wait for the draft day to hear NBA Commissioner Adam Silver mention Wembanyama to the Spurs.
With plans to carve Wembanyama into a formidable force, the Spurs are getting ready for the 7’4” teenage sensation and what they have in store for him we just have to wait and see. Best believe it’s going to be good!
