Twitter Will Soon Start Paying Content Creators For Ads Placed In Their Replies

Former Twitter CEO Elon Musk recently welcomed new incoming CEO Linda Yaccarino and said he would be overseeing the tech side of the platform. On June 9th, Mr. Musk made one of his biggest announcements since taking up the new role at Twitter.

Via a tweet, Musk revealed that the microblogging platform will soon start paying verified content creators for ads in their replies. “In a few weeks, X/Twitter will start paying creators for ads served in their replies,” part of the tweet read.

He also revealed that the first bloc of payment would total $5M although there was no mention of when these alleged payments would be made. “Note, the creator must be verified and only ads served to verified users count,” Elon added in the tweet.

The move by Musk was announced barely a week after newly named CEO, Linda Yaccarino took the helm at the social media giant. Yaccarino is recognized as an advertising veteran, especially for the role she played in NBCUniversal’s advertising department and projects.

Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform in October 2022, the platform has struggled financially leading to Musk laying off around 80% of the workforce to break even.

Musk has been an advocate of “free speech” on Twitter. An ideology that he refuses to give up on despite constant and apparent reminders that he is alienating advertisers.

Advertisers on Twitter have expressed concerns that their products would be put alongside harmful content or content that they do not approve of. This has become an issue more so after he laid off Twitter employees.

On Twitter, a large number of high-profile advertisers have removed their advertisements. Since January, 625 advertisers have ceased using the site, including Coca-Cola, Jeep, Unilever, Merck, and Wells Fargo.

The change cost Twitter an estimated $4.5 billion in lost advertising income. The recent development appears to solve the issue of where a brand’s ads will be placed enabling them to more easily target their niche audiences.

More Good News For Content Creators

Earning a living from the replies placed in their tweets is not the only reason content creators are excited about the future of Twitter. On Wednesday, Elon Musk, in a tweet, announced that content creators on the platform will be provided with the e-mail addresses of those who subscribe to their tweets.

“This platform will provide email addresses of subscribers (who opt-in) to content creators, so that creators are able to leave this platform easily & take their subscribers with them if they want,” the tweet read.

This provides content creators with much-needed security for their audiences. A major problem for content creators on most social platforms is that if they opt to leave or are forced off of a platform, then they lose their entire audience base on said platform.

However, with this new development, content creators will be able to take their entire audience from Twitter with them should they leave giving them complete control of their fan base.
