UK Professor Claims the Government Is Ignoring Sound Warnings Regarding AI

Stuart Russel, a professor from the UK on matters of AI, has taken issue with the initiative ministers have taken on regulating the technology. According to Stuart, UK ministers have been complacent about the risks AI posits on people and humanity.

Russel clarified that he is annoyed with how ministers have argued in favor of and implemented light-touch regulations on AI. His annoyance with this comes because the ministers are allegedly ignoring civil servants’ warnings that AI products pose a colossal threat.

Speaking to the Times, Russel like the said civil servants also expressed his fear for the technology. According to him, the world has made unprecedented progress in the development of AI technology.

He also added that it was possible that AI systems similar to ChatGPT could form part of a super-intelligent machine that would withstand any attempt to control it.

Professor Russel has been around and warning about AI for around a decade. He has particularly been calling on the use of AI to create autonomous weapons.

According to Russel, giving AI autonomous control over decisions in order to achieve a goal could be dangerous as the AI could choose an outcome that is particularly devastating for humans and humanity. He gave the scenario of an AI that is asked to stop global warming and thinks that the best course of action is to wipe out all human life from the planet.

According to the Daly Mail, a UK government spokesperson said: “We recognize that as Artificial Intelligence systems become more powerful, they will create new challenges and risks which is why the International Technology Strategy includes a public commitment to initiate a global dialogue on AI risks.”

“We will need to act and adapt the way we regulate technologies like AI that are playing an increasingly vital role in our economy and society,” They added.
