Thanks To AI, Tom Hanks Could Appear In Movies Even After His Death

Speaking on The Adam Buxton podcast, Tom Hanks, of Forrest Gump and Cast Away fame has raised the prospect that his career might continue past his death.

According to Hanks, he could continue to appear in movies thanks to artificial intelligence which could be used to recreate his image “from now until kingdom come”.

“Anybody can now recreate themselves at any age they are by way of AI or deep fake technology. I could be hit by a bus tomorrow and that’s it, but performances can go on and on and on and on. Outside the understanding of AI and deep fake, there’ll be nothing to tell you that it’s not me and me alone,” Hanks said.

“This has always been lingering. The first time we did a movie that had a huge amount of our own data locked in a computer – literally what we looked like – was a movie called The Polar Express,” he said.

The Polar Express (2004), is an animation film that was entirely animated using digital motion capture technology. Another example is Harrison Ford, 80, who was “de-aged” for the opening scene of Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny (2023).

Actor Val Kilmer’s voice was lost to throat cancer in 2015, but deep fake technology from Sonantic has recently been utilized to simulate the way Kilmer “speaks.”

“We saw this coming; we saw that there was going to be this ability to take zeros and ones from inside a computer and turn it into a face and a character. That has only grown a billion-fold since then and we see it everywhere,” he added.

While Tom Hanks seems excited about AI and deepfake technology not everyone in Hollywood is. One who isn’t is Keanu Reeves of The Matrix and John Wick fame.

Speaking to Wired Magazine, Keanu disclosed that he has a clause in his contract that prohibits his performances from being manipulated without his approval.

In the podcast, Hanks was also asked questions on the legal ramifications this technology was going to have in the industry.

He responded, “I can tell you that there is discussions going on in all of the guilds, all of the agencies, and all of the legal firms to come up with the legal ramifications of my face and my voice and everybody else’s being our intellectual property.”
