Thousands Pedal Across Turkiye  to Promote Healthy Lifestyles 

Istanbul, May 6th, 2024 – In a remarkable display of national unity, cycling enthusiasts from all corners of Turkiye took to the streets this weekend for the 11th annual Yesilay (Green Crescent) Bicycle Tour. The cross-country event, held simultaneously in in over 80 provinces. The aim was to raise awareness about addiction and promote healthy lifestyles through the an active life.

A Nationwide Call for Well-Being

From the coastal roads of Istanbul to the mountain trails of Erzurum, an estimated 2,000 athletes answered the call to join the Yesilay tour. Governors, officials, and community leaders echoed the importance of using physical activity as a positive alternative to addiction.  

“Sports are the most effective tool for combating addiction,” stated Istanbul Governor Davut Gul before the race. “Cycling, in particular, is an enjoyable way to foster well-being.”

Despite varying weather conditions across the country, participants showed unwavering determination. In Erzurum and Ardahan, cyclists braved rain and cold to advocate for active lifestyles and community engagement.  

“Our goal is to promote healthy living and fight addiction through sports,” said Emirhan Tanay, President of the Yesilay Erzurum Branch.

The event brought together people of all ages and backgrounds. They were united by a shared passion for cycling and a commitment to a healthier Turkiye. In Ardahan, around 100 participants from diverse age groups joined the ride, celebrating Yesilay’s 104th anniversary.

A Tradition of Awareness and Hope

For Yesilay, the bicycle tour has become an annual tradition. Nurullah Atalan, Yesilay’s General Manager, expressed the event’s broader mission: “Our goal is to raise awareness about addictions and instill a sense of sports and health consciousness, especially among our youth.”

As the cyclists crossed the finish line in various provinces, their collective efforts echoed a powerful message: Turkiye’s journey towards a healthier future is best travelled on two wheels, united in purpose and determination.
